MARY McCARTHY’S #1 BEST-SELLER
‘THE GROUP’ TREMENDOUS BUILD-UP FOR FEATURE!
Mary McCarthy’s “The Group” became a Number One best-seller almost as soon as it appeared in the stores and remained one for a long, long time. It ran through many editions and interest in it is still enormous.
New American Library has issued a special movie edition in paperback, and it’s now on the racks at bookstores, newsstands, super-markets, etc.
This, of course, opens the way wide for you to bookshop co-operations. BUT
PLEASE DON’T GET THE IDEA THAT THIS IS JUST ANOTHER BOOKSTORE TIE-IN!
It isn’t! It’s a great chance for you to cash in on the enormous publicity which this book has continued to generate.
Here are some ways you can do that:
Use enlargements of the two Art Stills shown at right in the windows of bookstores. Ribbons from the noyel’s characters to open pages of the book is a natural display setup for this art. Still numbers may be found among the Art Stills on Page 11 (bottom right).
MAILINGS: If the bookshop has a mailing list—and many of them do—make sure whatever they send out, be it on “The Group” or not, carries a “coming soon” announcement about your showing.
LIBRARIES: Rental or public—should be contacted for a card inviting reader attention to the fact that the Mary McCarthy novel has been made into a movie and that there are copies of “The Group” and other McCarthy books in the library.
BOOK SNIPING: Make sure you put up special paper on the rack calling attention to your showing. Also, arrange if you can, to enclose a herald or “coming soon in movie form” announcement in all copies, well in advance if possible.
WINDOWS: Your showing of “The Group” makes the book timely. This deserves at least a window—of the paperback and the hard-cover editions. Stills may be “captioned” with passages taken directly from the book, or ribbons, as shown on this page, can go from special art to sections of the book describing the eight women. The special door panels described below can form a background for a display.
BOOK MARKS: Print a quantity of 1-col. ads as book marks and distribute wherever books are sold or circulated.
