2S NaS Ra 9 ek, OO FAN PE NO a ee Pe ‘Satan Bug's’ Sole Femme Role Basehart's ‘Big News’ Story Launches His Acting Career If it weren’t for the fact that he once busted a detective on the nose it may well be that Richard Basehart, famed on screen, stage and TV, would never have become an actor at all. But he did deliver that punch, and a great actor he became, his latest role occurring in the Mirisch Corporation’s “The Satan Bug,” high adventure thriller in Color by DeLuxe and Panavision, which opens ............ at the Ae See Theatre under United Artists release. The famous punch was delivered while Dick was employed as a reporter on his father’s Times-Signal in Zanesville, Ohio. The boy had dug up a rather unsavory municipal scandal and his paper ran it. This hurt the feelings of a detective who was involved, and the latter stopped Dick on the street one day to tell him what he thought of him. One word led to another as the saying goes, and Richard swung. This kicked up more of a hubbub than the scandal itself and Richard’s father had to fire him. That was the end of his career in journalism, which he originally intended to pursue as his life’s work. All sorts of jobs followed, including a collectorship for a loan company, an axe-man for a surveying crew and even a politician who succeeded in returning his uncle to the job of mayor of Zanesville. But he didn’t like any of it so he decided to become an actor. He went to Philadelphia, got a job at the Hedgerow Theatre, and he was in. He played minor roles on Broadway for a while and then he appeared in the Broadway production of “The Hasty Heart.” He was an immediate and sensational hit and his career was off to the races. In “The Satan Bug,” in which he is co-starred with George Maharis, Anne Francis and Dana Andrews, Basehart worked under the producership and direction of John Sturges, who directed him before in the long movie career which began with Joan Leslie and Louis Hayward in “Repeat Performance.” It was his role in his third picture, a desperate killer in “He Walked By Night” which really established him in pictures and won him roles in such productions as “The Still SB-45 George Maharis co-stars with Anne Francis, Richard Basehart and Dana Andrews in Mirisch Corporation’s “The Satan Mat 1A Bug,” DeLuxe Color-Panavision United Artists suspense release opening ............ at the pavesgnees Theatre. Twist of Fate When Simon Oakland was 12, New York’s music critics were predicting great things for him as a violinist on the concert stage. Shortly after that, however, he broke his wrist during football practice and it was goodbye to chin rest and rosin. Whether that was good or bad Si himself doesn’t know, but he made an excellent career for himself as a supporting player, his latest being in support of George Maharis, Richard Basehart, Anne Francis and Dana Andrews in the Mirisch Corporation’s United Artists release “The Satan Bug,” in Color by DeLuxe and Panavision, opening ................ aE Ine ee es Theatre. Its music is by the well known Jerry Goldsmith and the film is a Mirisch-Kappa picture. TV Star Larkin Now Making Rep As Film Player If that government investigator named Michaelson in the Mirisch Corporation’s “The Satan Bug,” Color by DeLuxe and Panavision high adventure thriller opening ee ee at the ................ Theatre looks familiar to you, he should. He’s John Larkin, one of television’s busiest actors, and you may have seen him, among other shows, in Robert Montgomery’s Show, Circle Theatre, American Heritage, Camera Three, Studio One, U.S. Steel Hour, Edge of Night, Robert Taylor’s Detectives, Saints and Sinners and Bonanza. “The Satan Bug,” in which he plays a featured role with stars George Maharis, Richard Basehart, Anne Francis and Dana Andrews, is his third movie, his other two being “Seven Days in May” and “The Crazy Calloways.” Larkin came to TV _ directly from radio which he entered as a singer a number of years ago. “The Satan Bug” was produced and directed by John Sturges from the famous Ian Stuart novel of the same name. The film, a Mirisch-Kappa picture, is a United Artists release. L. A. Saw Real Aerial Dogfight In ‘Satan Bug’ It was a pleasant, sunny afternoon that day not so long ago, when strolling or hustling Los Angelinos may have looked up in the sky over Los Angeles and noticed a couple of helicopters buzzing about in a most peculiar fashion. Had they known what those ‘copters were flying around about, it is likely that the afternoon may not have seemed quite so pleasant to them. For the helicopters were engaged in a fight-to-the-death sequence for Mirisch Corporation’s “The Satan Bug,” opening ............ at the Seer Theatre. And that sequence happened to be the climax of the exciting tale from Ian Stuart’s best-seller, which is the threat of destruction of Los Angeles by deadly virus released from a bomb. The Color-by-DeLuxe-Panavision United Artists release, starring George Maharis, Richard Basehart, Anne Francis and Dana Andrews, was produced and directed by John Sturges, something of a bug himself when it comes to authenticity. The script said the action took place over Los Angeles, so over Los Angeles the action was taken—from a third peculiar-behaving egg beater. Still SB-20 at the Mat 2E Richard Basehart, famed on stage, screen and TV, plays a crucial role in Mirisch Corporation’s “The Satan Bug,” DeLuxe ColorPanavision suspense drama from the Ian Stuart novel, opening Theatre. John Sturges produced and directed the United Artists release. The ‘Satan Bug’ Director Noted For ‘Restless Imagination’ “The man with the restless Imagination”’ Hollywood’s famed Producer-Director John Sturges— specializes in high adventure with striking situations and stark conflicts. His now-famous “Gunfight at O.K. Corral,” “Bad Day at Black Rock,” “The Magnificent Seven,” “The Old Man and the Sea” and “The Great Escape” are examples. He does it again—and in spades, we are told—in the Mirisch Corporation’s “The Satan Bug,” starring George Maharis, Richard Basehart, Anne Francis and Dana Andrews, in Color by DeLuxe and Panavision opening ............ at the Nees peers Theatre under United Artists release. From Ian Stuart’s best-selling novel of the same name, “The Satan Bug” deals with a threat to humanity posed by the development of a virus which could wipe out the human race. Its climax is reached in a disabled helicopter high above Los Angeles where a fanatic is prevented from destroying the city below him. Although he is recognized today as one of the motion picture industry’s leading producer-directors, Sturges did not enter the business via the front door. Away back in 1932 he entered the industry as an assistant in the blue print department at RKO. From this he went to the art department and then he became an assistant film editor. From this he went on to the David O. Selznick organization as a production assistant, and finally he became a full-fledged film editor with his own scissors. Came the war and into the Signal Corps went Sturges where he worked his way up from private to captain, serving on all fronts and he has a bronze star, campaign decorations with four battle stars and twelve unit citations to prove he didn’t waste his time. Following his discharge he became an assistant director and then a full director at Columbia. “The Man Who Dared” was the first to emerge under his own megaphoning. Since then he has directed 30 full features, including some of the finest titles in the movie Hall of Fame. Dana Andrews Plays A General In Suspenseful ‘Satan Bug’ Dana Andrews, who has worn the uniform of practically every rank in the U. S. Army in his film career, finally achieves generalship in the Mirisch Corporation’s “The Satan Bug,” in which he s co-starred with George Maharis, Richard Basehart and Anne Francis, and which opens ............ at the Pee ea Theatre under United Artists release. It is in Color by DeLuxe and Panavision. In this high adventure thriller, produced and directed by John Sturges from the Ian Stuart novel, Andrews is the officer charged with supervising the investigation of a vital breach of national security. James Clavell and Edward Anhalt wrote the screenplay. One of the screen’s best known stars whose films have included many cinematic milestones, Andrews has been concentrating lately on the stage and _ television. “The Satan Bug” is his first motion picture in several years. During this absence from the screen he starred on Broadway in “Two for the Seesaw,” and appeared in many of the top dramatic TV series, including Ben Casey, The Dick Powell Show and Bob Hope’s dramatic anthology. Andrew’s list of picture credits is long and impressive. Among the best known of these are “Laura,” “Boomerang,” “The Best Years of Our Lives,” “My Foolish Heart,” “A Walk in the Sun” and “Sword in the Desert.” Beginning his career as an accountant, he hitch-hiked to Hollywood in 1930 to become an actor but ended up as a gas station attendant instead. He did some stock and even appeared as a singer but it wasn’t until 1938, when he got a minor role in the Gary Cooper triumph “The Westener,” that he attracted attention. From this he got small roles in various pictures but didn’t really “click” until he played a featured role in the nowfamous “The Ox-Bow Incident.” This made him a star of the first rank. “The Satan Bug” is a MirischKappa picture. Its music is by Jerry Goldsmith. Goldsmith Musical Score Noted motion picture composer and conductor Jerry Goldsmith, whose melody for “Seven Days in May” has attracted wide approval, is also responsible for the music in the Mirisch Corporation’s “The Satan Bug,” United Artists release in Color by DeLuxe and Panavision, opening ............ at the Theatre. One of the “oldest of the young pros” in the theatrical profession, the lovely native of Ossining, New York, was a child model, a wellknown TV personality with her own children’s program and whatall-not before winning fame in pictures, which wasn’t easy. She had been called to Hollywood twice but had failed to make an impression, so she had decided upon TV work as a career. But somewhere along the line she had appeared in “Bad Day” and she was seen and liked. So she was summoned back a third time and this time she made it big, her credits including such successes as “A Lion is in the Streets,” “Blackboard Jungle,” “Don’t Go Near the Water” and the well-received psychological study ‘Call Girl.” While Anne is all wrapped up in pictures, she admits she always wanted to be a test pilot. She has been taking lessons lately and almost has her time for a commercial license. She is also considered an excellent painter and an imaginative and_ resourceful cook. She records readings for the blind and has tried her hand at TV writing.
