Matt Sloane (George Montgomery), a captain in the Arizona Rangers posing as an outlaw, rides into Tombstone with a plan to round up Johnny Ringo (Jim Davis) and his gang. Sloane's wife has been killed and his son Terry (Scotty Morrow) has been wounded by a member of the gang. He leaves the boy with Delia Cooper (Beverly Tyler) and her father (Don Beddoe), the local assay agent. He then commences to put his plan into operation. He discovers that Ringo has been rustling cattle into Mexico and returning with payloads of Mexican silver.
Sloane realizes that Ringo must be working under orders, so he devises an elaborate scheme which pays off. After a series of adventurous incidents, Mr. Cooper, the meek essay agent, is revealed as the brains behind the gang and is killed by Ringo and his henchman Clanton (Gerald Milton). In a showdown, Sloane kills Ringo and Clanton, thus avenging the murder of his wife and bringing law to the once outlaw empire of Arizona.
Sloane, Terry and Della Cooper decide to build a home and new future together.
