Romy Schneider From Vienna Greatest Thing Since Waltz’ Can a school teacher be glamcrous? Can she hold a boy friend, who has a notorious roving eye, against the blandishments of strip-tease dancers, models, show girls and assorted man hunters? lf she’s Romy Schneider she can, and she does, as co-star with Peter Sellers and Peter O’Toole in Charles K. Feldman’s hilarious romp from an original Woody Allen script “What’s New Pussycat?,” United Artists Technicolor release opening Theatre. And the competition is fierce! It includes Capucine, Paula Prentiss, guest star Ursula Andress and a score of other beauties recruited frem the European stage and television by Producer Feldman. But maybe that’s because she’s Romy Schneider. Called “the greatest Austrian export since the Vienna waltz,” lovely Romy revealed herself as a particularly charming comedienne opposite Jack Lemmon in the recent “Good Neighbor Sam.” Her soft, animated features and large twinkling eyes lend just the kind of sparkle and charm to _ her portrayal of the teacher that Director Clive Donner, one of England’s greatest, demanded. Stardom in her native country came early for Romy. While still in her teens she established herself in Vienna as the leading new feminine screen personality of the post-war period. Her films, then, were in the German language and had a limited audience. But her screen magnetism exceeded national boundaries and she became an international star in Carl Foreman’s “The Victors” and Otto Preminger’s “The Cardinal’’ after altracting attention to herself by her performances in Visconti’s “Boccaccio 70” and Orson Welles’ “The Trial,’ Romy is the daughter of Magda Schneider and Wolf Albach-Retty, rated the most popular stage and screen couple in Austria before and immediately after World War II. She made her screen debut as the teen-age daughter of her mother in “White Lilacs” and it proved so successful that she was in immediate demand for other parts. Strictly a motion picture actress, Miss Schneider has appeared on the stage only twice, in Paris where she makes her home. ‘What's New Pussycat?’ Reveals Capucine As Brilliant Comic It seems that nobody dared to think that tall, elegant, stately and beautiful Capucine could—or would —ever play comedy. But along came the comedy hit “The Pink Panther,” in which she played Mat 1A Still WNP-33 CAPUCINE Peter Sellers’ wife, and a new star, so to speak, was born! A new comedy star, that is. Which is mainly why the lovely French actress shares stellar honors with Peter Sellers, Peter O’Toole, Romy Schneider, Paula Prentiss, Woody Allen and guest star Ursula Andress in Charles K. Feldman’s hilarious “What’s New Pussycat?,” United Artists release in Technicolor which opens...... at ther ker Ste ee Theatre. Because “What’s New Pussy cat?” they say, is funny. As funny as TV Funnyman Woody Allen, who wrote it, could make it, and Esquire Magazine just got through telling the world that Woody is the hottest funnyman of the year. When Producer Feldman read the script he knew that nobody but Capucine would do for the role of the beautiful neurotic whose icy exterior hides a passionate interest in men and completely complicates the lives of O’Toole and Sellers. Capucine (real name Germaine Lefebvre) was a top high-fashion model in Paris and New York before making her screen debut in “Song Without End.” ‘Pussycat’ Frantic Lovely Gals, Hilarious Gags, Big Stars, Paris Setting—All in ‘What's New Pussycat?’ Far-Out Farce To Play Here (General Advance) Charles K. Feldman’s “What’s New Pussycat?,” a frantic, far-out farce and free-wheeling romance, starring Peter Sellers, Peter O’Toole, Romy Schneider, Capucine, Paula Prentiss, Woody Allen and guest star Ursula Andress, will open at the Theatre. The motion picture, a United Artists release, was produced in Paris by Feldman and directed by Clive Donner in Technicolor. It is an original screenplay by Woody Allen. Burt Bacharach wrote the musical score and Hal David supplied the lyrics. This is the first screenplay for comedian Woody Allen, who placed his story in a Paris setting spiced with beautiful girls dressed in the smartest fashions and undressed in scenes which come alive in the famous Crazy Horse Saloon, home of the most breath-taking strip-tease artists in Europe. The motion picture is the first for Sellers since his near-fatal heart attack last year, and he brings to it all of his customary exuberance in the role of a mixed-up Viennese professor. eccveececee Ab LLG seve esesce Still WNP-80 Mat IE PETER SELLERS Peter O’Toole, in his first camedy role, is the editor of a French fashion magazine whose love life is complicated by too many beautiful women. These include: his fiancee, Romy Schneider; Capucine, whose icy exterior conceals a passionate interest in men in generol and O’Toole in particular; Paula Prentiss, a zany stripper at the Crazy Horse, and Ursula Andress, who parachutes for kicks and zeroes in on O’Toole. Still WNP-77 (Advance Production Feature) If you’re going to make a comedy that spoofs the fuss we make about S-E-X, the first thing you need is lots of beautiful girls and that’s exactly what Producer Charles K. Feldman gathered for his Technicolor laugh-getter “What’s New Pussycat?,” United Artists release opening ........ atthe .... There’s Romy Schneider, “the greatest Austrian export since the waltz,” who showed what she could do with comedy in “Good Neighbor Sam” recently. She plays the role of a language teacher who tries to get boy friend, Peter O’Toole, to give up all the beautiful girls in his life and settle dowr with hex. Then there’s Paula Prentiss as a kooky strip-tease dancer. Paula is well-remembered for her comedy in the recent “World of Henry Orient” in which she scored as the counterfoil for Peter Sellers, who is also starred in this film. A third beauty assembled by Feldman is the irresistible, heautiful Capucine who showed her enormous talent for getting laughs also opposite Sellers, in “The Pink Panther.” She’s a beautiful neurotic in “What’s New Pussycat?,” who uses an icy exterior to hide a passionate interest in men. A fourth (as guest star) is Swiss-born Ursula Andress, who plays a sex kitten in costumes said to make the famous bikini ea eee Vion he ot she wore in the first of the James Bond films, “Dr. No,” look like a Victorian bath robe. A comedy also calls for comedians and here, too, Feldman came through with some of the best. Peter Sellers, for instance, who is best known to American audiences for his hilarious roles in “Lolita,” “Dr. Strangelove,” “The Pink Panther,” “The World of Henry Orient” and “A Shot in the Dark.” There’s also a surprise comedian in “What’s New Pussycat?” He’s handsome Peter O’Toole who plays the top love interest in the comedy. Peter became world-famous overnight with his portrayal of the title role in “Lawrence of Arabia,” and his performance as Henry II in “Becket” did nothing to diminish that fame. His role as the young man who just can’t get enough feminine company in “What’s New Pussycat?” is said to be uproariously funny and those who have already seen him in it say his talent for the comic equals that of his dramatic. Then there’s Woody Allen, Es ‘Pussycat’ Gets Designer of Met Opera House Sets You may not know he’s had a hand in it but Richard Sylbert, once responsible for the art direction and stage designing for the Metropolitan Opera Company, and who also served in these capacities for the comedy success “How to Murder Your Wife,” played a large part in creating Charles K. Feldman’s comedy success “What’s New Pussycat?,” which opens ......... at the Theatre. The fact is that Feldman wouldn’t think of entrusting the chore to anybody else. This began years ago when Feldman made the dramatic “Walk on the Wild Side,” and continued right down to this day. Sylbert has also been responsible for the production design of such films as “The Manchurian Candidate,” “The Fugitive Kind,” “Baby Doll,” “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” and “The Pawnbroker.” The film, a United Artists release in Technicolor, was directed by Clive Donner. eee reese eesees Mat 2E Ursula Andress, voluptuous sensation of the James Bond pictures, appears as guest star in Charles K. This is his first screen appearance and his first movie story. Besides being funny on his own in a big way, Woody wrote many of the Sid Caesar television shows and has a Sylvania Award to show how good he was at it. A lot of “What’s New Pussycat?” was filmed in Paris, where the story takes place, particularly in some of iis more renowned striptease palaces such as_ the famed Crazy Horse, and_ the several seen in the picture are the real thing, shot on location by Feldman’s technicians. Beauties, comedians, a good story and an _ interesting locale are great. But it takes directorial talent of a rare quality to make it a smash motion picture, and for that task Feldman selected Clive Donner when he saw _ the British comedy “Nothing But the Best,” directed by Donner, and from that point on nobody else but Donner would do. Ursula Andress Bikinied Again In Comic ‘What's New Pussycat?’ If you James Bond fans think Ursula Andress in her bikini was something in. the recent “Dr. No,” wait ‘till you see her in Charles K. Feldman’s hilarious “What's New Pussycat?,”’ United Artists release in Technicolor which opens....... at the Theatre. The lovely Swiss-born actress wears a bikini in the latter, we are told, which makes the “Dr. No” job look like a winter overcoat. More than that, we’re assured, there’s a sequence of her in a cobra skin figure-hugger that should have made the cobra proud to die for the honor. It’s all part of the great fun promised in the first original screenplay from the pen of TV Funnyman Woody Allen, who also appears in the picture along with Peter Sellers, Peter O’Toole, Romy Schneider, Capucine, Paula Prentiss, Woody Allen and a host of other lovelies culled for the purpose from American and_ continental show biz by Producer Feldman. The film was directed by Clive Donner, one of Europe’s toppers. Miss Andress may be said to have enjoyed two triumphal debuts in motion pictures. The first time she was “discovered” in Europe and rushed to Hollywood as one of the great finds of the period after her continental triumphs in “The Loves of Casanova” and the Ponti-De Laurentiis “An American in Rome.” But, she admits, she was quite lackadaisical about learning the English language and as a result her career bogged down. In America, at least. However, when she married actor John Derek she devoted herself to serious sludy of the language and succeeded in mastering it to such a degree that she now speaks it with only the slightest—and very charming—accent. Then came “Dr. No” and the bikinis took over, and her second career in American pictures began. She was inundated with offers but accepted as a starter, only two—a starrer with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in “Four for Texas” and another starrer with Elvis Presley in “Fun in Acapulco.” Just prior to starting “What's New Pussycat?,” she was cast in the title role in the new version of Sir Rider Haggard’s “She.” ‘Best’ Film Editor Does Likewise For ‘Pussycat’ When Clive Donner, England’s noted screen director, won the coveted assignment of megging Charles K. Feldman’s hilarious “What’s New Pussycat?,” Technicolor United Artists release opening AbptNO ya ssccrcters see Paiere Theatre, the first thing he did was to call Fergus McDonell, ace British film editor, and tell him to pack his bag. That’s because Donner doesn’t do much without McDonell. Donner knows that an editor can make or break even the best of ‘em, and “What's New Pussycat?” is one of the year’s major film comedies. It’s impressive cast boasts of Peter Sellers, Peter O’Toole, Romy Schneider. Capucine, Paula Prentiss and Ursula Andress. The story is the first screen original by TV Funnyman Woody Allen who is also in the cast, and its daring strip-tease costumes—or lack of them—are by the sensational avantgardists Fonssagrives and Tiel, who Still WNP-84 Mat 1C PETER O’TOOLE believe skin is to be seen. So it was McDonell for Donner, the same McDonell who edited his previous comedy hit—and the one which won him the “What’s New Pussycat?” assignment, “Nothing But the Best,” and the thunderbolt in another genre, the widelydiscussed “The Caretakers.” PAGE 9
