HITCHCOCK HAS RECORDED SPECIAL PHONE MESSAGES These have been personally narrated by Alfred Hitchcock for theatres having automatic telephone answering devices. Recorded messages are for both ADVANCE and CURRENT. Because the Hitchcock voice on your theatre phone is so unusual, look for ways to publicize the material. Announce it in connection with merchandise tieup ads, on heralds or throwaways. Investigate the possibility of a tieup with the classified section of a newspaper. Perhaps the names of ‘TODAY'S LUCKY BIRDS", scattered thru the classified section, receive complimentary tickets. As part of the banner announcement across the top of the section, use a box in which you ask classified readers to call the theatre (or a special number) and listen to a surprise message about "'The Birds." If your theatre does not have an automatic telephone answering device, check your telephone company concerning the use of a special number to be used for the tapes. BUMPER STRIPS Exhibitors in the larger towns will find it a practical move to make up their own bumper strips for automobiles with the teaser line ''THE BIRDS IS COMING!". The usual size is about 4 x 15 inches. Print them in black on yellow stock for maximum visibility and with pressure-sensitive adhesive, now available at most print shops... One of your pre-advance promotion moves is to utilize every contact available in order to get your strips on commercial fleets. Start with trucking outfits you do business with. Promote the taxi companies that pick up fares in front of your theatre. Try to get the strips on any and all commercial vehicles of people you make tieups with. Get your teaser line ''THE BIRDS IS COMING!" cn the highways! BIRD FEEDING TROUGHS ON 24 SHEET BOARDS For any situation using billboards around town or on highways, here's the way to attract birds to your billboards. Pick one or several important posting spots and have your sign shop build a temporary, shallow trough along the lower part of the poster frame. Fill the trough with plenty of bird seed (use wild bird seed, not domestic). Add a can or two of water and some bread crumbs. You can figure that it will take wild birds up to two weeks to find this food. After that, you'll have plenty of birds around your billboard. The same idea may be applied to smaller postings and to the poster displays out front of your theatre. AIRLINE TICKET OFFICES Tie-in of the title with the airways is obvious. Go after airline travel agencies with such lines as: "SWIFT AS THE BIRDS, VIA BLANK AIRWAYS!" . . . "BLANK LINES LUXURY BIRDS COVER THE SKIES!" .. . "STRAIGHT AS THE BIRDS FLY, WITH SO-AND-SO JET SHIPS!"" Go after both window and counter tie-up displays, using colorgloss stills and insert cards or window cards. THAT “UNGRAMMATICAL” LINE! When considering media for your teaser campaign don't overlook both college and high school publications where use of "THE BIRDS IS COMING!" will be a real eye-catcher to students of English! FAINT CHECKS Have your printer turn out small cards with copy reading: "FAINT CHECK . .. The bearer having fainted during a performance of ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S 'THE BIRDS' is entitled to complimentary ticket good for the performance of another motion picture . . . Management, BLANK THEATRE." Page 36
