THE HITCHCOCK WOU. Hitchcock's Personal Messages to HOLD-OUT CROWDS waiting in YOUR LOBBY... In his own inimitable style familiar to the millions who have watched him, The Master diverts the attention of waiting lines in your lobby and beyond WITH FOUR SPOTS SPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR HOLD-OUT CROWDS! Run lines with loud speakers attached to store fronts down the street. Spots are FREE! SPOT NO. 1 ALFRED HITCHCOCK: "How do you do. Welcome to The Alfred Hitchcock Hour—which is how some of our wittier patrons refer to this period of watchful waiting. There are three very good reasons for asking you to wait until this performance of THE BIRDS is over. First, this policy gives each new flock of patrons a fresh perch. Secondly, everyone sees the picture from the beginning which is most helpful since that is where the story begins. And finally, it enables us to remove the shocked and nervewracked from the premises.. Without this policy it might be midnight before they would be discovered cowering beneath their seats. | believe you can now begin moving into the theatre. Quietly, please. No sudden movements. We don't want to upset the birds." SPOT NO. 2 ALFRED HITCHCOCK: "How do you do. This is Alfred Hitchcock; that is, the spirit of Alfred Hitchcock. It was felt that in a lobby as crowded as this one, what was needed was more spirit and less flesh. | wish to thank you for your patience and splendid cooperation. However | know you have enjoyed standing around like this. In fact there are some who say that waiting in line is the best part of the evening. We do this, of course, not as part of the nation's emphasis on physical fitness but because we think you can enjoy THE BIRDS more if you see it from start to finish instead of vice versa. As for THE BIRDS, | am sure they are as eager to see you as you are to see them. —We make them wait in line, too." SPOT NO. 3 ALFRED HITCHCOCK: "This is Alfred Hitchcock bringing you a very special announcement.—Stop shoving. It is not my customary policy to go. about making speeches but the management reported that you were an unusually surly lot and needed cheering up. Actually, having you line up in this ridiculous manner is part of the preparation for the picture. Now you know how those four and twenty blackbirds felt. When you see THE BIRDS | think you will be glad we insisted that you start at the beginning. THE . HITCHCOCK PUNCH oo Otherwise it would be very much like arriving late at a party and never being properly introduced to the guests. Now I believe you may proceed to your seats. Uh-Uh. Stop shoving.” SPOT NO. 4 ALFRED HITCHCOCK: "How do you do. My name is Alfred Hitchcock. Since we have no other entertainment planned for you while you wait here in the lobby, | have been asked to speak a few encouraging words to bolster your morale. | know you are wondering why we only allow people to see THE BIRDS at certain stated intervals. Actually we adopted this policy on the advice of the manager of one of this country's largest zoos. He allows people in to view the animals only at feeding time. In that way, if there are any unfortunate accidents, the ani mals won't suffer from eating between meals. With that comforting thought | leave you." While | have nothing to do with the film now on display, | do have a speacial warning to all of you. —THE BIRDS is coming. That seemingly ungrammatical statement is not meant as a signal for you to put out some bread crumbs or erect a bird bath. Scarecrows are much more in order. —And | suspect that after you have seen THE BIRDS you will stop building bird sanctuaries and devote more of your energies to making people sanctuaries. All this will become abundantly clear after you have seen THE BIRDS. By the way, we shall insist that you view THE BIRDS from the beginning. After all, that is where my name appears and we wouldn't want you to miss that." SPOT NO. 2 ALFRED HITCHCOCK: "This is Alfred Hitchcock telling you that THE BIRDS is coming! If you really knew what these little beasts are capable of, that simple statement would be enough to start a stampede. You see, while there is nothing unusual about the appearance of these birds, their manners are atrocious—and rather terrifying. Please heed my warning: THE BIRDS is coming—to this very theatre. THE BIRDS has a cast of thousands, a frightening number of whom are playing the title role. | insist that you see it from the beginning." SPOT NO. 3 ALFRED HITCHCOCK: "How do you do. This is Alfred Hitchcock speaking. Please stop looking for me and listen. No matter how much you have enjoyed the motion picture you have just seen, it can't stay here forever. Sooner or later it will leave and then . . . THE BIRDS is coming. If you have always imagined the birds to be gentle, peace loving creatures, you are in for a rude shock. Because they do seem so gentle, because they are so tiny and so numerous, they create a new terror, never before seen on the screen. To appreciate this to the fullest you must see THE BIRDS, and see it from the beginning. | am confident you will be properly shocked. Watch for vos TE BIRDS.” SPOT NO. 4 is similar to No. 3 with exception of a change in tense, for customers entering theatre.
