Chalk From Ciffs
(Current)
The Hollywood touch was very much in evidence in England’s famed resort area of Brighton during the filming in Technicolor of Universal’s “The Chalk Garden,” current attraction at the Se SUE Saka BEM ce eta er Theatre.
Producer Ross Hunter arranged with the Brighton Tourist Bureau for 500 small pieces of actual chalk from the cliffs to send to newspapermen around the world for use as_ paperweights. When he arrived to pick up the souvenirs, he discovered workmen dynamiting overhanging shelves of the chalk cliffs, knocking off pieces weighing over 50 pounds each.
The large rocks were broken into smaller ones and as a result more than 3,000 newspapermen were mailed paperweights — a souvenir of the highly-dramatic, emotion-packed film.
