Screen Career Is A Very Serious Business For An Actor Says James Darren
(Advance) Whoever said that Hollywood’s new breed of young screen actors don’t take their craft seriously enough just never did
have James Darren in mind.
Every evening during production of Universal’s ‘The
Lively Set,” opening...
Theatre, as Darren stars with Pamela Tiffin, Doug McClure, Joanie Sommers, Marilyn Maxwell and Peter Mann, he read the entire shooting script through at least three times.
“TI try to stay in character every waking minute,’ he expla‘ned. “Maybe I sound like a kook, but it’s the best way I know to give a performance all I can. And rereading is especially important for a screen actor because of the many scenes that are filmed out of story sequence.”
Darren has wanted to be an actor as far back as he can remember, but only managed to squeeze in two weeks of formal study with the Stella Adler group in New York City before he was spotted by a lady casting director for Columbia Pictures.
He was simply standing in a New York office building waiting for an elevator whe she convinced him to go with her to meet a talent executive in the building. Three days later, he signed a long-term contract.
“It really bugs me,” said Darren, ‘when an actor needles you for either being, or having been, under a long-term contract. What better way is there, for an unknown like I was, to learn his craft than with steady work? Doing the Greenwich Village bit of cold-water flats and cups of expresso coffee may sound romantic, but it loses its rosy glow when you can’t afford to eat.”
