Thompson drove faster than anyone had ever gone before in his Challenger | streamliner at Bonneville Salt Flats on Sept. 9, 1960. The speed, one way, was 406.6 miles per hour. On the required return run for the world record, he broke a drive shaft, which thwarted an almost sure chance to establish a new record.
Born Dec. 7, 1928 in San Fernando, Calif., Mickey grew up in El Monte, Calif., and started tearing automobiles apart when he was only 11 years old. He began racing cars in 1950. Since then he has been building cars and racing them. Today, the Mickey Thompson Equipment Company of Long Beach, Calif., manufactures more than 200 items for racing and sports cars in a plant that covers 90,000 square feet.
BILL KRAUSE

Krause, who was born in Los Angeles January 2, 1933, began his career as an automobile racer by winning his first competition — the S. C. C. A. race at Bakersfield in May, 1956. In six additional races around Southern California that year, he placed first in four and second in two. In 1961, he won the Los Angeles Times-Riverside Grand Prix driving a Birdcage-Maserati, and the following year he had five consecutive wins at Oakland, Pomona, Laguna Seca, Santa Barbara and Reno, in the same car.
In 1963, Krause contracted to Mickey Thompson for General Motors testing, Firestone Tire testing and Chevrolet Stingray competition driving.
JIM NELSON

Nelson, who is 36, began his hot rodding career as an amateur enthusiast in 1948, entering speed events at California’s dry lakes, on the famed Bonneville Salt Flats and finally in organized drag racing. His current successes include racing in 35 states and winning over 200 trophies, and he has achieved the speed of 186.72 miles per hour, from standing start to the end of the quarter-mile drag-race length.
At the present time, Nelson manufactures dragsters with partner Dode Martin in a plant in Calrsbad, California, near San Diego. His Dragmaster Co. builds only highly specialized dragsters, and only occasionally, now, does he race them.
DUANE CARTER

Carter, who started his career by winning a college sponsored ‘‘Hack Race”’ at Fresno State in 1930, has done all types of speed auto racing including 14 Indianapolis 500’s. In the early days of his career after studying Mechanical Engineering at Fresno State College, he did midget car racing at first, then, as time went on, participated in all divisions of race cars over major tracks in the U. S. A., Europe, South America and New Zealand.
One of the organizers of the United States Auto Club which took over sanctioning of speed contests from the AAA, Carter became its director of competition from 1956-58. Born in Fresno, Calif., May 5, 1913, he now lives in Indianapolis.
