4 Year Old Babe Ruth Plays Important Role in “Three On A Match”
Buster Phelps, a four year old Hollywood boy who plays an important role in First National’s ‘‘ Three On A Match,’’ coming next .....:...... ae to the .........c.:...--..-... Lheatre, looks more like Babe Ruth did at the same age, than in all probability the Babe did himself. Certainly he is a ringer for the ‘‘King of Swat’’ at the present time.
Buster was chosen for this First National picture because Director Mervyn LeRoy is a stickler for perfection of detail. The play, by Kubec Glasmon and John Bright with adaptation by Lucien Hubbard carries a line spoken by Joan Blondell, in which she says that if the boy had a@ cigar and a baseball bat he would be an exact image of Babe Ruth. So LeRoy insisted on a boy that looked like Ruth. The casting office was in despair and put forward the argument that no one would expect a child of four to look like the famous ball player. But LeRoy was insistent. Scouts were sent out to look over all the children available for pictures. Buster Phelps was discovered. His nose and mouth are replicas of the Babe’s and the general eontour of his countenance is the same.
Buster not only fitted the role for looks, but he proved to be an excellent actor with a good memory. The boy has a great number of lines to say.
Joan Blondell, Warren William, Ann Dvorak and Bette Davis have the featured roles in the picture, supported by a cast that includes Lyle Talbot, Gloria Shea, Grant Mitchell, Sheila Terry, Hale Hamilton and Buster Phelps.

Out of fifty girls, Mr. LeRoy finally chose Virginia Davis as a younger edition of Joan Blondell, a golden blonde.
Seventy-five more were inspected before Dawn O’Day was selected to

Miss Davis was hardest to match, however, and more than two hundred girls were scrutinized by the director before he finally chose Betty Carrs a very light blonde, approaching the platinum type.
All three of the children have had considerable experience on the screen, having been playing small parts ever since they were babies.

Ann Dvorak Tells How She Made Up as a Girl 16, for “Three On A Match”
Ann Dvorak made some interesting fashion discoveries when, for her role in her latest First National picture, ‘‘Three On A Match,’’ which will be shown next. ..............00.. at the Soe ee Theatre, she found that she was required to appear first as a schoolgirl of sixteen. She achieved it perfectly, but the result taught her many secrets that she passes on. ;
‘«First, throw away all of your sophisticated clothes,’’ Ann _ says. ‘‘Select simple, girlish little frocks that allow full play to the inherent youthfulness of your personality.’’
She found that a hair-dress brushed back from her face, without a part, but with soft ringlets lower down on the cheeks, assisted her greatly in turning back the years. A narrow ribbon run through the curls at the back and tied in a small bow on top of the head, completes the transformation.
Finally, Ann looked to her eyebrows. Thin, plucked arches, she found, are aging! To be youthful, they must be untouched by make-up, normal as to arch, and unplucked.
The high neckline, preferably round, and uwunrelieved by frills, although a Peter Pan collar and soft bow tie, is another secret Ann found in her search for youth.
To reverse the order, Ann had but to break all of her new-found rules. And it was harder for her to appear twenty-five than it was to become sixteen again—for the actress herself is only nineteen.
Joan Blondell and Bette Davis have other important feminine roles in “‘Three on a Match,’’ while Warren William plays opposite the three beauties.
The story is an original by Kubee Glasmon and John Bright with screen play by Lucien Hubbard.
