Checkered Careers of 3 Girls Dramatically Told in ““Three On A Match”
The engrossing story of three girls, starting as classmates in the same public school, and the varying fortunes that cause their paths through life to intersect ten years later, is told in a fascinating manner in First National’s production, ‘‘Three On A Match,’’ featuring Joan Blondell, Warren William, Ann Dvorak and Bette Davis which opens today at the Be soesecvsre ters theatre for a. ...........days’ engagement.
Three more widely differing girls than the trio portrayed in this vivid drama would be hard to imagine. One is the class beauty, a girl of wealth and position. A second is the honor girl of her class. The third is the school ‘bad girl,’ tomboy, hoyden and mischief maker.
When they meet again, the class beauty is the spoiled wife of a wealthy lawyer who adores her. The student has become a successful secretary. The tomboy, after a checkered career that has taken her through a reform school, is a vivid creature of Broadway’s night life.
How the destinies of the three work themselves out is the drama that ‘«Three On A Match’’ unfolds. Mervyn LeRoy directed the production for First National from the original story by Kubec Glasmon and John Bright with screen play by Lucien Hubbard. The unusually large cast includes Lyle Talbot, Hale Hamilton,
Grant Mitchell, Humphrey Bogart, —
John Marsden, Buster Phelps, Frankie Darrow, Dawn O’Day and Clara Blandick.

Consider it as a study in the comparative power of heredity and_ environment, Ann Dvorak’s delineation of Vivian Revere, the school beauty, daughter of well-to-do and cultured parents, seems to demonstrate that there is as much to be said for inborn tendencies as for acquired modes of behavior.
of higher education was the State Reformatory, and who, nevertheless, wins on merit the distinguished attorney her school chum, Vivian, had cast disdainfully aside, and marries him— hard-boiled, smart-cracking Mary holds her environment at arm’s length with the utmost ease.
Together with Bette Davis—in the role of the class valedictorian and

honor pupil, who spends her life being a conscientious, hard-working secretary—the three girls are as vivid and interesting characters, strictly in the modern vein, as the motion picture sereen has offered for many a long day. Underlying the whole drama, is the human note of dissatisfaction on the part of each girl with her own position, that gives the story an added sense of reality. Vivian would gladly barter her life of luxury and wealth for the bohemian freedom of Mary Keaton’s existence; Mary thinks nothing would be more perfect than a doting husband, a town car and an open bank account, such as Vivian has. And Ruth, the stenographer, impartially envies both of them.
What happens to the lives of all three when Vivian’s restlessness leads her to abandon both her husband and her home in an effort to find the freedom she longs for, constitutes the main burden of the picture.
As the attorney who finally finds in Mary Keaton the qualities he had loved Vivian Revere for, Warren William gives his best performance. Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak and_ Bette Davis are perfectly cast as the three girls. Lyle Talbot’s portraya: of a thoroughly despicable yet outwardly fascinating scoundrel, is done with a restraint that heightens the sympathy everyone must feel for the misguided Vivian. Allen Jenkins, who scored highly in ‘‘Blessed Event,’’ gives another matchless performance.
