The Duke of Athens, himself about to marry, threatens punishment and Hermia and Lysander elope toa nearby woods. Demetrius follows them and he in turn is followed by Helena, who loves him dearly. A group of artists also enter the forest, to rehearse a play to be given in honor of the Duke's forthcoming marriage. But this strange forest is inhabited by supernatural creatures of the night, ruled over by Oberon and Titania and they are having a lover's quarrel. In anger Oberon orders Puck, the imp of mischief to anoint his sleeping Queen's eyes with passion flower juice. When she awakens she will become infatuated with the first creature she meets. Puck, watching the artists at work in the wood, uses his potion to turn one fellow, called 'Bottom's" head into the face of a donkey. Titania wakes up and falls madly in love with Bottoms despite his animal head. Puck impishly uses the potion to complicate the love affairs of the two young couples, All of these misfortunes happily dissolve as Oberon, Titania and their fairy host retreat before the approach of day, ina lovely ballet The Flight of the Moonlight. The story ends with the magnificent court ceremony and the artists convulse the court with their presentation of their tragical comedy...
