George Arliss now at the.>...... Theatre in Warner Bros. “Alexander Hamilton,” was born in London, } England, on April 10, 1868, the son of a printer and publisher. His early ambition, to become a circus clown, was replaced by interest in the stage and after one year’s apprenticeship with his father he succeeded in breaking into theatrical work in the old Elephant and Castle . stock company, playing melodramas.
With this experience behind him, Arliss toured the English provinces with one company and another, even trying musical comedy with some success for one season. He eventually succeeded in securing roles with Mrs. Patrick Campbell to play in London and with her he made his first trip to America, as a member of her stock company.
Meantime he had married Florence Montgomery whom he had met first in a theatrical school in England.
Following the tour with Mrs. Campbell, Arliss played in “Darling of the Gods,” and then with Mrs. Fiske in several roles. He was first starred in “The Devil,’ next in “Septimus,” and then came the record breaking “Disraeli” in which he toured for five years.
This was followed by “Paganini,” “Hamilton” and “The Green Goddess” which proved to be another tremendous success, Following these and a season with short plays, Arliss made his first silent pictures, “The Devil,” “The Ruling Passion.” and “Disraeli.”
John Galsworthy’s “Old English” supplied Arliss with another great stage success and then he toured America with his version of Shakespeare’s “Merchant of Venice.”

tre, has been successful both as actor and producer, commencing his career at the Manhattan Theatre, New York, in 1904 with Mrs. Fiske.
After appearances in “The Rising
of the Moon,” “The Likes o’ Me,” “The Squaw Man” and others, he in 1911 played the part of the Clerk in “Disraeli” with Mr. Arliss. For the following seven years he acted as stage manager for Mr. Arliss for his productions of “Disraeli,” ‘“Paginini,” ‘““The Professor’s Love Story” and “Hamilton.”
Mr. Digges came into prominence as an actor in 1919 when he appeared as James Caesar in the Theatre Guild production of “Jane Clogg” at the Garrick Theatre in New York. He remained with the Garrick Theatre, appearing in practically all of their productions. Among the latest were “Major Barbara,” “Dynamo,” “Man’s Estate” and the all-star revival of “Becky Sharp.”
His first talking picture part was that of the Examiner in Warner Bros. “Outward Bound.” He was recently seen in support of Bebe Daniels in “The Maltese Falcon.” Mr. Digges was born in England.
