eAUBLICITY Life On Location With “Another Dawn”’ a | Company Goes To Arizona To Film Desert Scenes by FRANCIS HEACOCK The telephone in your hotel room rings. You grope for the instrument and finally find it in the darkness. In a sleepy voice you say hello. ‘‘Good morning. It’s five-thirty,’ 3 says the hotel clerk. You wonder if you detect a tiny note of elation in his voice. **O.K.’’ you reply and look at your watch on the night stand. ‘‘He’s a liar,’’ you add to yourself when you see that the hands indicate four-thirty. Then you remember Yuma time is an hour ahead of Hollywood time. You go down to the coffee shop that is filled with a mob — 150 strong — of sleepy-eyed technicians and actors, and have breakfast. Errol Flynn, the male star of the production, Warner Bros.’ ‘¢ Another Dawn,’’ in which he is co-starred with Kay Francis is already in make-up. He _ hobbles along with the aid of a cane, having sprained his ankle in a tennis match the day before leaving Hollywood. ‘‘Another Dawn’’ is the adventure-romance film that comes to the ...............05+ Theatre TONG orgies esesescee se ‘Everybody has finished breakfast by 6:30 and the mob gathers on the sidewalk in front of the San Carlos hotel. Assistant directors, unit managers and location managers, all seeming very, very efficient for so early an hour, begin loading the actors into school buses that have been chartered by the studio in Yuma. The buses are all loaded by now and the extraordinary efficient assistant direetors, unit managers and location managers are loading you into a big seven-passenger sedan with Flynn, Herbert Mundin, Billy Bevan and three other principals. You balance yourself on the jump seats between Bevan and Clyde Cook and wish again that you were home in bed. As you cross the Colorado river the sun is just beginning to come up. You make a hasty mental calculation and realize it’s the first sunrise you’ve witnessed since New Year’s day two years ago; and you certainly didn’t appreciate that one. At the end of road you find yourself in the location camp. The scene that greets you is one of intense activity. Scores of men are scurrying about, mounting cameras on tripods, saddling horses, loading guns with blank cartridges for the battle scene. You watch interestedly throughout the day as the battle between wild Arabs and a handful of British soldiers led by Flynn wages fiercely among the sand dunes. At noon you enjoy a box of lunch with actors and crew. Then you go back to your position behind the cameras as the battle proceeds from the point where it was discontinued just before lunch. Work goes on until there is insufficient light, then back to the hotel, a quick and very welcome shower, a friendly dinner shared with the whole company, and to bed. And up again at five-thirty the next morning. You are forced to marvel at the patience of these people in the movie business. No task is too difficult to overcome; no obstacle .is too high for them to surmount. Your correspondent glanced over her shoulder and read a paragraph or two. The article stated, in effect, that a new Chega Newest hobby of Kay Francis is needlepoint work. She finds it so fascinating that she’s given up knitting so that she can devote all her spare time to it. The ocean liner Bremen once stopped just off the coast of England to help Ian Hunter who was adrift in a leaking yacht. The Warner Bros. production, “Another Dawn,” starring Kay Francis, Errol Flynn and Jan Hunter, now playing at the .......... Theatre, required mountainous sand dunes for several sequences. Southeastern California afforded the best dunes. Yuma, Arizona, being the nearest city with hotel accomodations extensive enough to care for the 150 members of the troupe, the company made its headquarters there, transporting players and technicians in buses, studio cars and trucks across the Colorado river to and from California and the sand dunes, 20 miles distant. crop of ‘‘best-dressed women’? had sprung up in Hollywood, and that the youngsters comprising the group were determined to wrest feminine fashion laurels from Miss Francis, Carole Lombard and: the other ‘‘veterans.’’ ‘Bless ’em,’’? chuckled Miss Francis. ‘‘They can have whatever ‘laurels’ they feel I possess without any struggle whatever.?’ That was not the first time Miss Francis had similarly expressed herself concerning feminine style leadership. She never has nor ever will make a special effort to be known as one of the best-dressed women in the world. Yet year after year her name appears well up in, and more often than not tops, the various lists of ‘‘ten best-dressed women.’’ She doesn’t care whether she’s Number One or Number 999 in the lists of best-dressed women compiled by the fashion arbiters. She wears clothes that she thinks are suited to her personality, and wears them in such a manner that she arrests attention wherever she may go. We called on Orry-Kelly, the Warner Bros. stylist who designs Miss Francis’ picture wardrobes and asked him what he thought were the chances of Miss Francis ever forfeiting her crown to someone else. ‘“As long as Kay Francis lives,’’ he stated, ‘‘she will always be a well-dressed woman. She probably always will be ranked as one of the world’s best-dressed women. ‘*She is not well-dressed merely because of what she wears,’’ he continued. ‘‘Of course she selects her clothing carefully — she does not buy at random — but the principal reason she always looks so fashionably gowned is that she wears her clothes with the natural assurance sO many women — and men, too — lack. ‘‘There would be more welldressed women if, when someone compliments them on a new dress or gown, they would agree instead of replying: ‘Oh, this old rag. Why it’s at least three months old.’ “‘That remark—I’ve heard it a thousand times if I’ve heard it once—is a direct admission that the woman who voices it lacks assuranee,’? Hot Luncheon For Kay On Location Kay Francis has solved the problem of how to have a hot luncheon on location. She has assembled a series of thermos bottles to contain soup, coffee and other hot foods. Together with pewter plates, cups, saucers and cutlery, the thermos jars fit into a small handbag. Miss Francis used the luncheon kit frequently on her current picture, the Warner Bros. romantic-adventure film, “Another Dawn,” in which she shares stellar honors with Errol Flynn.
