Shreve Page Two ——The Synopsis (Not For Publication ) Frank McCandless (PHILIP CAREY ), an oil wildeatter, crash-lands his World War I Jenny plane on beautiful Ann Evans’ (DIANE McBAIN) farm, which she runs with her indian foreman, Charley Two-Bits (IRON-EYES CODY), since the death of her father in an oil field accident. At first glance, Frank is convinced he’s found both the girl and the oil rich land he’s been seeking. That evening at the Chicken Farm saloon Frank is chatting with long-time friend Jericho Larkin (JAMES BEST) when he sees a surprise visitor. Ann has come to inform Frank she can sell his plane for $1,000. For that sum plus one-fourth the royalties she’ll lease her farm to Frank for drilling. Ann doesn’t know Frank is in the employ of Chick Carrington (CLAUDE AKINS), a ruthless oil promoter responsible for her father’s death. Frank immediately goes to Chick’s home to tell him the good news. Here he finds Chick ordering Jericho to stay away from nightclub singer Julie (FAY SPAIN). Jericho quits his job with Chick. And when Frank learns that Chick plans to cheat Ann out of her rightful share of any oil profits,he also defies the boss and declares he’ll drill this well alone. Jericho agrees to team up with Frank and inviegles $2,000 from Julie to defray expenses. They win their first encounter with Carrington when they overpower some of his gang who try to prevent them from bringing supplies in. Drilling is progressing well and Frank and Ann decide to celebrate at the Chicken Farm. Their romance is ended when Chick tells Ann that Frank had been working for him at the time he bought the lease. He also tries to pin the blame for her father’s death on Frank. That same evening Julie spurns Chick’s offer of matrimony. In his quest for election as state senator he wants to create the illusion of being a happily married man. The next day Frank brings in nitro torpedoes to shoot the well. He and Jericho complete the perilous task, but after the explosion there is only a small geyser of water. Again they have failed to strike oil. Frank and Ann maintain their now strictly business relationship, but Jericho breaks off the partnership to go to Tulsa where he’ll deal in oil leases. Julie accepts Jericho’s marriage proposal and will leave with him by bus for Tulsa at 11 p.m. Jericho is to pick her up at the hotel. At the Chicken Farm the apparently generous Chick gives Jericho two weeks back pay, which Jericho runs up to $4,000 in a poker game. It ends in a wild brawl and overnight jail confinement for Jericho. Julie, once more stood up by her unreliable suitor, marries the persistent Chick. Jericho decides to stay on and with his gambling winnings has the money he and Frank need for another strike. When Chick hears reports that they’re likely to hit oil this time, he orders Al (WILLIAM PHIPPS), one of his aides, to dynamite their engine. Charley Two-Bits is killed in the explosion in a vain attempts to prevent the dynamiting. Jericho steals an engine from Chick so that drilling can be resumed. Julie comes to Ann/’s farm to warn Jericho and Frank that Chick will be there with the sheriff to arrest them for grand theft. Shortly thereafter Chick does arrive with Al and the sheriff. Frank holds a torpedo that he threatens to drop unless Chick admits he dynamited the engine and killed Charley. Al talks and implicates his boss. Then Frank forces Chick to help shoot the well. This time a gusher of oil rains down on them. Frank repurchases his plane to depart for new oil fields. He’s pleasantly surprised when Ann has her suitcase placed in the plane. She doesn’t intend to sit home and enjoy her oil royalties. She’ll take her chances with Frank. (Running Time: 99 Minutes )
