We hear the fashion squib, “Go out and buy a new hat and you’ll feel better,’’ aimed at the girl who is feeling dull and mousy. But in our opinion a new coiffure can work ten times the wonders of a new chapeau. It has been known to completely change the face of things—as well as a lady’s face.
Just to pass on a bit of potent information, short hair is coming back in style in Hollywood. But I don’t advise it except for the girl who contemplates an outdoor vacation when she won’t want to be bothered with any complicated beauty rites. Anyway, it is unnecessary to actually cut the hair since it may be kept at a more workable length and curled up to appear short.
This is a trick of Betty Field’s. Betty’s hair is shoulder length, the one preferred by most of the stars. But occasionally she turns it up in three neat layers of curls which are combed out very easily. She wears this arrangement in “Blues In The Night.” But for wear with her evening gowns,

which are usually of the period, full-skirted type, Betty prefers a more classic arrangement, upswept into deep waves and curls.
To look important and feel different try planning a hair-do to correspond with the type of dress you are wearing. A tailored one with suits, a fluffy one with simple sports dresses, a queenly one for evening, ete. And this doesn’t necessitate a personal coiffure artist to trail you with comb and brush. Simple arrangements may still be unique. And now that artificial hair is back in vogue the most ornate coiffure is possible.
‘Blues In The Night’ Gowns Run Gamut
A super-sexy wardrobe is Betty Field’s lot in Warner Bros.’ “Blues In The Night,” currently at the Strand.
Betty plays the part of a blues singer, “hard, fiery and attractive,” with Priscilla Lane, Richard Whorf, formerly of the Lunt and Fontanne company, Elia Kazan and Jack Carson.
She runs the full costume gamut, starting with gingham, going into cheap finery as the jass band she sings with begins to make money, finally appearing in shimmering—and revealing—gowns as the music and the picture reach a crescendo.

Priscilla Lane Tells Career Girls
How To Vary Small Wardrobes
Because Priscilla Lane typifics the wholesome American girl who works for a living her ideas on clothes for “the white collar girl” are important.
As we see “her,” this young girl with ambition to succeed, looks chic as a duchess in the daytime in her little tweed suit or her black or navy frock with clean white touches. At night she eagerly doffs the streamlined clothes that remind her of work to don a frivolous evening gown. She’s equally relaxed in both. On Monday she dreams about Saturday and the weekend, plans what she will wear, with slacks and very smart play togs playing the leading roles.
Priscilla goes on from here to say:
“If I worked in an office I’d prefer dark clothes simply because they do not soil so easily. But everything I wore would show some imagination. It might be revealed in a tailored clip anchored in some unusual and startling place, or a novel belt.
“T’d like to add to this too by saying that similar dark clothes are never handsomer than when topped by a good-looking sports coat. Then taking this very same outfit this girl could eliminate that letdown one feels after working all day by changing her dark shoes for some smart little green pumps. I have a heelless pair I’m crazy about. They could be worn to and from work and no boss could object to that.
“If I lived alone I’d try to like it and heed the advice of that very noted little book that tells you to dress up at night in a wonderful pair of lounging pajamas even if your only date is with a good book. I believe I’d choose a pair similar to those
I wear in “Blues In The Night’ because they have been giving me such a lift. They’re in a soothing shade of blue silk with shirtwaist top, very wide trousers and a knee-length top coat of blue flannel. The belt is a handkerchief tie of blue and searlet polka dots and I wear sandals to match. The polka
dots are as large as peppermint creams,
“Every girl who works for a living should be smartly dressed. And even though she must keep within a strict budget she can look very chic if she plans her wardrobe carefully with a great many interchangeable accessories.”

PRISCILLA LANE, Hollywood's typical career girl, currently starring in ‘Blues In The Night" at the Strand
Because the feminine eye glances coldly at any radical change in the silhouette rounded shoulders are still not seen in Hollywood as often as the ‘softly squared shoulder. Girls are, however, beginning to warm up to them and by spring the padded round shoulder will probably appear in the majority of clothes.
They will be featured in many new screen togs, and especially in coats and dressy afternoon frocks.
The dolman sleeve has many devotees among screen designers. For summer Irene is showing the short dolman, and for “Blues In The Night”? Damon Giffard has done three coats and a suit with long dolmans. One, worn by Priscilla Lane, is actually a summer coat, the script necessitating, but the silhouette is identical to a favorite one for the coming season. He uses a light weight royal blue flannel lined with gray satin and the shoulders actually broadened by a luxuriant collar of lynx. The sleeves are set in deeply to give a soft upper fullness as contrasted with a slim skirt.
For Betty Field, who plays a night-club hostess in “Blues In The Night,” he has designed a very glamorous evening frock that also features an interesting new shoulder treatment. The long fitted sheath of black crepe ends in two scrolls just above the bosom and a yoke and long tight sleeves of sheerest black net gives a semi-nude decolletage effect that is definitely alluring. Giffard considers this version of the new “covered shoulder” evening mode one which is likely to catch on strongly with ladies who are loathe to mask pretty shoulders entirely, but are hankering for something new in evening wear.
Key Your Accessories To Your Birth Date
Priscilla Lane is Hollywood’s newest devotee of the mode for wearing one’s own birthday flower and jewel. And there’s nothing remotely Pollyanna-ish in her suggestion that other devotees practice the corresponding virtues as well as combining flowers and gems to reveal in what month you were born. It’s roses for love and pearls for a long life that make a strong combination for Priscilla’s happiness as a June girl, not to mention the smart way in which they’re teamed in several of her ensembles. She wears a single strand of pearls at the square neckline of a black wool dinner dress then pins a group of American Beauties at the waistline. Priscilla is currently starring in “Blues In The Night.”
Well-Groomed Hands Always An Asset
It is instinct for an actress to be proud of her hands. They are constantly in view, so they must be well-groomed and move with grace.
The simple little trick of working in the residue of face cream left on her hands after a facial massage is used by Priscilla Lane,, star of “Blues In The Night,” to advantage. When she has the time or makes the time, Priscilla also warms a little castor oil and massages that into her hands, donning a pair of cotton gloves before she climbs into bed at night.
If she sees her nails splitting in spite of this care, Priscilla increases the amount of milk in her diet, because milk contains calcium, vital to nails.
