Theatre ORS ee oe oy THE HAIR To be beautiful, hair must first of all be healthy. And one of the most important details in keeping your hair healthy is never, never to expose it to extreme, drying heat. For that reason I never sit under the mechanical ‘dryers’ in a beauty shop. Hair should be dried by hand, in the sunshine, if possible. ~ But even if you live in a city apartment and have no way of ‘getting much real sunshine, or during the winter months when you often give yourself a shampoo at night, you can dry your hair by hand with a soft Turkish towel, rubbing and massaging it until every drop of water is absorbed and every strand of hair gleams. The steady rubbing and masage necessary to get the hair thoroughly dry in this manner is Diggers of 1933.’ ) THE BATH A lovely skin is due to two things—first, good health, and second, the care you take of it. Nowadays, a woman knows that beauty often begins in the bath—for a clean skin is a lovely skin—and besides, a bath is so much fun! Of course in the morning I seldom have time for what I call my ‘fun-bath.’ So before dashing to the studio, I take a quick shower, starting with fairly hot water and gradually finishing with cold. At night I have the sort of bath I love, the kind that refreshes both my mind and my body. I begin by letting the tub run full of water as hot as I can stand and in it I drop great handfuls of my favorite bath-oil. Tl admit I’m extravagant with it and pour in far too much, but it makes the water so soft and fragrant! Just before stepping into the tub, I cleanse my face with cream, and after removing the dirt and grime and old makeup, smooth on another thin film of nourishing cream, which I allow to remain on while I lie in the tub for about twenty minutes, closing my eyes and letting my mind wander drowsily. Then I take my perfumed soap (it matches the bath-salts) and whisk it into a fine fluffy lather, and, with my big bath-brush, rub it thoroughly into my skin. It’s time now to turn on the cold water faucet, in order to cool the water and close my Still No. LL—10c pores. By this time all the tiredness of the day has left me and I feel completely relaxed and fresh. When I get out of the tub, I give myself a brisk rub with a tough towel until my skin tingles and I know the circulation has been worked up, sending the healthful blood coursing to every nerve and muscle. Then I splash on big handfuls of eau de cologne and follow this with dusting powder. Beauty Hints From Top to Toe ‘very good for the hair too, as it stimulates circulation and brings a nice glow to your sealp—which, in turn, means that the growth of hair is encouraged. THE POWDER Your complexion changes with the seasons, whether you realize it or not. Of course if you go in for a heavy summer sun-tan, you expect to change your cosmetics to match your darker skin. But the thing that so many women forget is that during the aeppednal ines aa Theatre: Oe. ick ek A) THE FEET Every woman should give her feet careful, regular attention for foot-ills are responsible for as many wrinkles as old age, and as many grey hair as heart-and-home problems. While the average woman realizes this, she is too often prone to devote hours to her face, hands and hair and then say that she ‘hasn’t time’ to give her feet the treatments and and exercises they need. The most important rule in caring for the feet is to be sure always to buy shoes that are large enough, and which are basically suited to your feet. If you have a long, narrow foot, you should wear slender shoes with fairly pointed toes. Short, broad feet should be shod in short, roundtoed lasts. The toes must never be cramped or forced into shoes that will cause them to overlap. Besides selecting the right types of shoes, one should also devote at least five minutes every night to strengthening the feet. One simple exercise will do this. Simply stand erect with the feet at a forty-fivedegree angle and raise and lower the body on the toes for five minutes. Begin with a one-minute session, of course, and add one ‘minute each night until you can do it five minutes without tiring. After this exercise, mineral oil should be massaged into the feet. Follow this with a good, hot bath, letting the water gradually run cool until it is almost icy. It is just as neces sary that they change their cosmetics to match, also. One of the best ways to achieve the right blend of powder for skins that are growing slightly — and unintentionally — tanned is to mix your own powder. -: First, take a box of powder of the shade you usually use and also get a box of a deep rich suntan powder. Then, each day sift into your box of light powder a few grains of the darker shade until you have reached a shade that matches your skin. In this way, you darken your powder as imperceptibly as your skin grows darker and there’s never a chance you'll have the muddy look that results from powder that doesn’t match. I believe in a liquid foundation beneath the powder, and prefer a pale natural flesh tone, which I blend in with a tiny pad of cotton. After it has thoroughly dried, I apply a thin coating of powder, then a dab of dry rouge on the cheeks and a final dusting of powder. Blue eyeshadow and mascara, scarlet lipstick, and I am ready for anyand-everything under the summer sun.
