During the World War he helped lay the mine barricade in the North Sea. After the Armistice he was transferred to the air division of the navy and captained the team that won the Schneider cup in aviation for the United States against the best fliers of Great Britain, France and Italy. He held the record for speed and endurance in seaplane races, had contributed a great deal to the science of aviation when an accident in his own home permanently crippled him. Retired from the Navy, and released from the hospital after two years, Lieut. Commander Wead turned to literature, and was successful from the start. Last year he wrote the sensational stage play ‘‘Ceiling Zero’’ which ran an entire season on Broadway.
