The makers of it did what Doug might call a “snappy job.” Tt is ten feet square, has a gabled roof, swinging doors and leaded windows of stained glass. It is mounted on large castors and can be easily moved from stage to stage at the studio, over paved courts. It is a mystery to everybody but the designer, how so much furniture can be included in such a small space, for the midget runabout also includes two closets for changes of costume. It contains a cot, a dressing table, easy chairs, reading lamps, an electric fan and an elec tric heater, as well as an exhaust |: ventilating system. And there is plenty of room left to get about. The movable dressing room was made primarily for efficiency. If young Doug has to change makeup, it no longer means a trip across the lot. If he has to change costumes it can be done with lightning speed. The screen play and dialogue are by Waldemar Young, Alan Dwan’s direction adds another unity achievement to his enviable career. Story, settings, photography and direction cannot make a play great without the proper people to make the characters live—and that is just what “Chances” has. Douglas, Jr. as the laughing, brutal, tender, devil-may-care, loving, forgetting, Jack Ingleside—succeeds so well that it is hard to imagine that he was a ten-year-old when the lads who lived the life he portrays, were in the height of their tragic glory. “Chances” presents a new Fairbanks with depth and heights of which he has not yet made us conscious, Though “Chances” is a story of the war but few sequences deal with scenes of action. Those that do go depict the dangers encountered by the artillery—a branch of the service—which has not before been done on the screen. Life! Romance! Action! Spectacle! Grandeur!
