STARRING AV THE STORY Outlaw Joel McCrea breaks jail in Missouri and heads west for the Colorado Territory. En route he meets and befriends new seitlers Henry Hull and his daughter, Dorothy Malone. At his destination, his gang’s hideout in a deserted mountain village, McCrea meets two confederates, James Mitchell and John Archer, and Virginia Mayo, a frontier waif recruited from an El Paso dance hall. Gang boss Basil Ruysdael, in ill health, persuades McCrea to work on one more job. McCrea agrees, on condition that this is his last job. Suspicious of his confederates, McCrea outwits them, pulls off the hold-up alone and escapes on horseback with Virginia. They ride back to the hideout where the posse smoke signals warn them of imminent capture. McCrea orders Virginia to remain, while he rides off, but he is soon brought to bay high up in a deserted Indian cliff-dwelling. Virginia follows and attempts to save him but McCrea is tricked into showing himself in the open and is picked off at a distance by a sharpshooter. In a final desperate stand Virginia and McCrea go down together in a hail of bullets.
