‘Colorado Territory’
Arriving At Strand
Warners’ Western Drama Stars
Joel McCrea and Virginia Mayo
Combining breathtaking scenic beauty with tense, blazing action, Warner Bros.’ long-awaited “Colorado Territory”, starring Joel McCrea and Virginia Mayo, arrives at the Strand Theatre on Friday for a week’s engagement.
Midst the towering buttes and red rock canyons of western Colorado, a studio troupe worked for over two months to record in its natural setting the unusually suspenseful tale of a hunted outlaw, Wes McQueen, who fought to clear his name around that territory during its wildest and most romantic two-gun days. John Twist and Edmund North penned the vivid story.
Joel McCrea, one of Hollywood’s greatest star portrayers of western action roles plays the title role of the notorious McQueen while lovely Virginia Mayo, equally at home in drawing room or bathing suit takes
the colorful part of “Colorado” Carson, a beautiful and fiery frontier waif, part Indian who falls in love with McCrea and fights by his side in some of his more rugged battles.
Supporting the stars in the big cast are Dorothy Malone who plays the lovely southern girl newly arrived in the territory to seek a new home with her father, played by Henry Hull. James Mitchell, who scored recently as the brilliant dancer of the big Broadway hit “Brigadoon”, came west to play an important role in the picture.
Complete with old Spanish towns, the early days of moonlit nights, great prairie and mountain scenery, as well as plenty of two-fisted footage, “Colorado Territory”, directed by famed action director Raoul Walsh, is headed for a big reception from local moviegoers.

PERSONALITY FEATURE —
McCrea Meets Adversary
In Heralded Outlaw Drama
Two brilliant and sincere performances in an unusual story, offering a penetrating glimpse into the lives of an outlaw and his half-breed sweetheart, are due to thrill local motion picture goers soon.
With Joel McCrea as Wes McQueen, one of the west’s most notorious outlaws, and Virginia Mayo playing “Colorado” Carson, beautiful part-Indian girl, Warner Bros.’ “Colorado Territory” comes to Strand on Friday a much-heralded action western melodrama.
Written by John Twist and Edmund North, “Colorado Territory” is the epic tale of a hunted outlaw who rode the territory around Durango, Colorado in its wildest days, and it is in the country of towering buttes and red rock canyons that this romantic picture was actually filmed by the entire troupe on location for more:than several months.” ©
But it is probably toward the two colorful characters that most of the attention is to be directed. As Wes McQueen, a man hunted by the law, Joel McCrea tackled a challenging role for the handsome six foot six inch star. A natural rider and outdoor man, McCrea today owns one of the
largest working ranches in the San Fernando valley. And it was in this type of two-gun role that some of his greatest film successes have been scored, starting some years back with “Wells Fargo”’.
Playing opposite McCrea is lovely Virginia Mayo who for the first time in her starring career essays an outdoor role. As “Colorado” Carson in rough though revealing clothes, Miss Mayo is given a colorful opportunity for she is a half-breed Indian girl, beautiful, wild and vivacious, a girl reputedly able to handle a six-gun or the heart of a man with equal dexterity.
Among the more suspenseful episodes in “Colorado Territory” is the train robbery, a thrilling sequence in which the outlaws swing aboard from galloping horses in true early western style. Raoul Walsh, famed director, has left no dearth of action in this dashing tale.
Also in the cast are lovely starlet Dorothy Malone, as a southern miss traveling west with her father, Henry Hull, and James Mitchell, brilliant dancer of “Brigadoon”, Broadway hit, who also plays a strong featured role in “Colorado Territory”.

Nine Years Later--Sock!
This is the way it is in the movie business.
In a picture released nine years ago, Joel McCrea and Harry Woods fought a desperate battle on a moving train. The brawl ended with McCrea uncorking a right that knocked the villain right out of the story.
But the two didn’t mix again until they met one day on a set for “Colorado Territory” at Warner Bros. Studios. The picture opens Friday at the Strand. McCrea was a desperado this time, but Woods was worse—he was a double-crossing desperado.
“It’s good to see you again, Harry,” said Joel, shaking hands.
Pretty soon Director Raoul Walsh called them into the center of the room, gave his instructions and told them to go back to
their corners and come out fighting.
McCrea moved in quietly, cautiously, and caught the other man flat-footed as he was stealing some money that belonged to the leader of their gang. McCrea jabbed his right (holding a .45) into his opponent’s ribs. Woods lifted his hands and seemed helpless. But as McCrea turned to leave, Woods snatched a gun from a dresser drawer and fired, knocking a hunk out of a door frame close to McCrea. The latter went to the floor then, his own gun blazing. Another shot came his way and caught him in the left shoulder, but he put a couple of finishing slugs into Woods.
“Cut!” said Walsh. “Very good!”
