Turn On Glamor— Jean’s New Motto
Jean Muir, featured with Barton MacLane in “Draegerman Courage”, the First National picture which comes tO the... SRNCALTE: Olle scscccuteeists has finally decided to change not only her appearance but her way of putting her personality across to audiences.
In the first place her hair is again the natural brown which it was before the make-up men of the movies decided she should be blonde. And the thousands of letters from her fans show that eight out of ten approve the change.
The really great change in Jean is, however, the different ways she employs to convey her personality to her audiences. Those who saw her marvelous characterization in “As the Earth Turns” remember the simplicity and remote
O’Neill Studies Medics to Play Role of Doctor

“I’ve noted that successful doctors are always pretty fair actors, well versed in masking their own emotions and suiting their moods to the purpose at hand,” said O’Neill.
“Many of the others could learn much by studying acting as I, an actor, learned by studying doctors. In fact, I’m even thinking of starting classes myself. I’ve had enough experience as a physician—before the camera.”
O’Neill plays the part of a country doctor who was_ entombed with two other men in a mine cavein in the picture.
“Draegerman Courage” is a dynamic drama of the gold fields and the heroic rescues of entombed miners, written by Anthony Coldeway.

Jean’s Red Hair Live Topic with Her Screen Fans
Jean Muir leads all other feminine stars at the First National studios in fan letters received. The cause, Jean declares frankly, is a rush of requests for portraits of her as a “brownette”, rather than any sudden doubling of popularity.
She changed from _ neutral blonde to her natural hair color, dark reddish-brown, some time ago.
The change Jean announces, will be permanent. Many of the letter writers requesting photos declared they already had autographed pictures of her as a blonde.
The proportion of approval and disapproval of the move was roughly as follows: approval, 80 per cent, disapproval, 20 per cent. But many of the latter admitted they might be reconciled to the change after they had seen “Once A Doctor”. In her previous film, “Fugitive in the Sky”, Jean was still a blonde.

But other and more vivid parts require different tactics. There are tricks in all trades, including acting, and Miss Muir has at last come to see the value of the glamorous wiles which have been so effectively employed by great actresses in all generations.
Jean learned much herself in the experimental theatre which she conducted for some time— and from which several very successful players came to the screen. In “Draegerman Courage” Miss Muir plays the role of a country girl whose thoughts of personal adornment are forgotten in her heroic desire to help the man she loves rescue their own comrades from death in a caved-in mine.

They floundered in water waist deep, choked with debris, in the small, rock-filled mine set, with more water dripping from the rock roof down their necks. Nor were they allowed to change clothes and dry off between takes because the different scenes had to match closely.
Rocks, close imitations of real ones, were dropped from above. Though light, they didn’t add any to the harried players’ peace of mind. To alleviate the discomfort of the stagnant pool in which they worked, they wore hip boots and long woolen underwear beneath their clothes.

He plays a miner in the film, and to perfect his pick and shovel technique, grown a little rusty in late years, he dug a small swimming pool all by himself in his back yard.
The pool is twenty feet long, ten feet wide and six feet deep. The ground is hard and clayfilled. He finished the digging in a month, then had a contractor lay the concrete.
A pick does not feel strange in the burly actor’s hands. Before he started work on the stage, he had a pretty hard time of it. Many times he worked for enough for coffee and cakes, digging ditches and doing construction work.
In the mining scenes he digs his way through fallen dirt to entombed men. He had plenty of callouses on his hands when he played the scenes, thanks to digging the swimming pool.
