This is not to be considered in the same category of an ordinary voting contest. It will not roll along on its own momentum once you get it started. It will require consistent follow through on your part in order to get the most out of it for your showing of the picture. And you can’t do it alone. You must surround yourself with the most influential people in your city in order to give the idea proper recognition from the press and public. If you do not have this “‘pull’’ to start with, it is best that you direct your activities along other lines, following other suggestions on the exploitation pages. HERE ARE THE FIRST STEPS YOU TAKE: 1. Consult with a leading woman who is highly influential and active in the town’s bigdoings. Explain to her the tremendous publicity advantage to her group of selecting the town’s “First Lady’; what this would mean to encourage the women in town to interest themselves in social and civic welfare of the city. Stress any other local angle that you are familiar with that will tie in convincingly. 2. This leader assembles a representative group of men and women leaders in the social and civic life, to sponsor a campaign to honor the local ‘First Lady.”’ 3. This ‘First Lady’’ may be honored for her contribution to the general welfare of the city and its citizens. She may be the head of a large charitable organization, or she may have fostered work in behalf of the DayNursery, or she may have helped young girls in educational and vocational training. In fact, she should typify everything that the title, “First Lady” stands for. 4. The selection of the ‘‘First Lady”’ is to be made in any way the sponsoring group so decides. It may be done by a popular vote with ballots clipped from the cooperating newspaper and deposited in a ballot box in your theatre, or it may be by special designation of the sponsoring committee. [13] 5. Your interest in this camgaign is the publicity. Therefore you serve as publicity representative, and naturally, the more times “First Lady’ is mentioned in the papers and on the radio, the better your picture will be known when you open. 6. You reap the benefit by having the “First Lady’? honored in your theatre on the opening night of the picture.
