Ybich a. v Upened At The Strand Last Night (Review Featuring the Story) It was a chastened audience which left the Theatre last night after seeing ‘‘Five Star Final,’’ the Louis Weitzenkorn melodrama, which so stirred the emotions of blase Broadway last year when it was presented at the Cort Theatre The screen version has even added to the passionate sweep and power of the play. It is all there—drama—comedy—tragedy— _ gatire—hypocrisy—love—all that is life. The theme of “Five Star Final” is the havoe wrought in the lives of innocent people by the circulationboosting and utterly heartless methods of certain types of modern yellow journalism. The owner of the paper while constantly urging more sensational stories for the paper is as constantly prating morality. Edward G. Robinson plays the part of the managing editor, a man who inwardly despises, but outwardly approves, the policy—till the great moment when—but that is the story. The evil eye of the staff fastens to the unobtrusive Townsends and their pretty daughter, Jenny, who is about to marry a well-to-do youth Twenty years before when Michael Townsend married Nancy Vorhees) he was fully aware of the fact that she had killed a man in self defense. Out of the grave of the years the ruthless erew of the Gazette drags the skeleton—Jenny’s lover is temporarily separated from her by his horrified parents—her own. parents commit suicide—the hideous guggernaut of persecution drives ruthlessly on. Mr. Robinson has never given a performance of such moving intensity. His final speech when the true man emerges from the hideous disguise—ranks him among the elect. His support is eminently capable. H. B. Warner, as the man whose wife and daughter are dragged before the cruel criticism of the world, as fine work as we have ever seen on stage or screen. Marian Marsh is not only beautiful but emotionally true as the daughter. Frances Starr as the mother is almost unbearably poignant. Not that all the moments of the drama are tearful—there is much comedy to lighten it—unforced comedy. Others in the cast are Anthony Bushell, George E. Stone, Ona Mun H. B. Edward G. Robinson presents the most dynamic and movingly human role of his career as Randall, managing editor of the paper—who finally rebels against the unhumanity of his hypocritical big boss and resigns. Robinson and coming to the Theatre cast averaged eleven hours work per day, not including two entire Sunday afternoons and evenings spent on polishing lines in a preliminary rehearsal. The supporting cast is large and impressive. When my lines is ‘This galley is short two sticks. What do you want me to do? Replate on the bulldog edition?’ I simply had to know just what I was talking about, before I could say it in a way to carry conviction to my audiences.” That is the reason that Robinson, with others who were to make the press room scenes of the picture, went so often to the Los Angeles newspapers—sat in as guest copy reader— listened to the lingo—caught the mannerisms natural to the craft. When he began the part, he really knew the game. That is why his Randall is so vital. Featured in Mr. Robinson’s support are Marian Marsh, H. B. Warner, Anthony Bushell, George E.
