He conspires with Joan Simpkins (Patricia Ellis), daughter of the college president, to get a real crew tor the coming year. She does her part, signing up Tony Foster (Walter Johnson) and Bob Wilson (Warren Hull). She also persuades a former famous coxswain of a championship crew to send his. son, HE, Prendergast Biddle (George E. Stone), whose rhythm has turned to music instead of rowing. Meanwhile Speed and Squirmy (Mary Treen) send coy invitations to prospective rowers, inclosing Joan’s picture and signing her name. Wilson, with whom Joan falls in love, cannot enter college because of low scholastic standing but he signs up under an assumed name without his father’s knowledge. Foster, in love with Joan and jealous of Wilson whom he knows as “Bob Smith,” finds out about the ‘‘come-on” letters but says nothing. With a new “rhythm theory” which E. Prendergast Biddle has developed as coxswain, crew prospects are bright. He asks Joan to run away and marry him but she refuses. He overhears her tell Speed that she loves Bob Wilson and believes him to be a third party. Telling Wilson that Joan has played both of them for suckers, Foster persuades him to leave. Wilson’s father (Joe Oawthorne) broadcasts an appeal for Bob to return. When Foster says that the boy whom Joan loves has the same name, Bob realizes the mistake and_ races back to the regatta. He jumps into~the~shell at the last minutes before the race starts. The Billings crew plans to race to the tempo of “The Collegiana”’ played by Biddle’s orchestra. The Triton coach, hearing of this, has his band play the rhumba throughout the race, whereupon Biddle gets his tempo mixed and the Billings crew falls back to last place. However, in a thrilling and hilarious finish, the Billings band drowns out the Tritons with ‘‘Dixie’ and the shell sweeps in front for a victory. Joan and Bob. patch up their misunderstandings and Squirmy forsakes her first love, Speed, for the goofy musician and coxswain, E. Prendergast Biddle. (Review ) ‘Freshman Love’ Is Smash Hit At Strand Premiere College music and college thrills cleverly admixtured with love and laughter make the Warner Bros. comedy romanee, ‘‘ Freshman Love,’’ which was shown at the SSA pice Theatre yesterday for the first time locally, delightful entertainment. Martial airs of the athletic field, sentimental love songs and peppy dance tunes are as much a part of campus life as the every day grind of the classroom and in this picture are so blended with a most whimsical and humorous plot as to make it delightful entertainment. George Ade, America’s leading humorist, supplied the story idea for the picture which treats of one of the flaming topics of the day, the relative importance of sports events and scholastic standards. Unfortunately for the crew coach in this particular college, the president is old fashioned enough to flunk out athletes who fail to pass their examinations. The president’s daughter connives with the coach and flirts with the finest oarsmen from other colleges, persuading them to switch to her college. The picture winds up in a blaze of excitement with a crew race which is won in the last second when all seemed lost, after which coeds and freshmen manage somehow to untangle their knotty romances. There is a splendid comedy cast with Frank McHugh playing the part of the college coach. Never was he funnier than when he is lugubriously bewailing his lack of oarsmen or when he is jubilantly rejoicing over the winning of the race. It is Patricia Ellis who throws a wicked eye at the famous oarsmen. Not only is she a capable actress, with a flair for comedy, but she sings excellently, one song by herself and one with Warren Hull, the radio star who has the romantic lead. Hull, who was both a musical comedy and radio favorite is proving himself an. excellent actor, having recently joined the film colony. Others in the cast who do exceptional work are Joe Cawthorn, George E. Stone, Mary Treen, Henry O’Neill, Alma Lloyd and Anita Kerry. William McCann has done a fine piece of directing. The story and screen play are by Earl Felton and George Bricker, the lyrics by Jack Scholl and Joan Jasmyn and the music by M. K. Jerome. Radio Star Now Sings In Film Warren Hull made his reputation on stage and radio as a singer, but sings in pictures for the first time in Warner’ Bros.’ ‘*Freshman Love,’’? which comes to tee = Theatre on He has three songs in the college musical film including, ‘‘ Freshman Love,’’ ‘‘That’s What I Mean’’ and ‘‘Romance After Dark,’’ the latter in a duet with Patricia Ellis.
