(Prepared Review) Dramatic Story Of Life After College Scores Strand Hit So many problems confront the new college graduate of these days, and those problems are so close to the average family, that the First National production, “Gentlemen Are Born,” which had its local premiere at the ............. Theatre yesterday, might well have been taken from the experiences of individuals known to most of those who have witnessed it, and who were profoundly impressed by the picture. Robert Lee Johnson, the anthor, has written a thrilling drama, for which First National Pictures has furnished a cast of sterling film players. Franchot Tone, who has the leading role, is supported by three of the finest actresses on the sereen, Jean Muir, Margaret Lindsay and Ann Dvorak. None of them have ever been seen in finer roles or have given better performances. Jone, who portrays a poor boy whose ambition is to become a newspaperman, is in love with Margaret Lindsay, in the character of a wealthy society girl. Miss Lindsay’s part calls for deep emotional acting and she rises to these intense scenes with the genius of a real artiste. Tone gives a human, finished and thoroughly sympathetic rendition of his role. Jean Muir portrays the sweetheart, and later the wife, of Tone’s college chum, Ross Alexander, who, although a well known Broadway leading man, is making his screen bow in this picture. Ann Dvorak, contrary to her usual roles, has a tragic part. She is the screen wife of another of the college chums, but this one cannot fit himself into conditions as they exist. She gives an outstanding portrayal of the girl whose life is beset with tragedy. Nick Foran, former Princeton football star, has this part. It is his initial picture, as it is that of Robert Light, the fourth member of the quartette whose brilliant prospects and hopes go glimmering in a financial crash. Others who do excellent work in important roles are Charles Starrett, Russell Hicks, Arthur Aylesworth, Henry O’Neill, Addison Richards, Marjorie Gateson and Bradley Page. Alfred E. Green, one of First National’s ace directors, has welded the picture into a finished entity and brought out the dramatic situations and comedy relief with unusual skill. The theme song, “When You Call the Roll, Alma Mater,” was written by the famous song team of Ir ving Kahal and Sammy Fain. Eugene Solow and Robert Lee Johnson are credited with the sparkling screen play. First National has scored again with this picture, which is recommended to everyone who has not forgotten, or who still retains, the aspirations of youth. Tone Only Graduate Of 4 Film College Boys Only two of the cast of “Gentlemen Are Born,” the First Na tional production dealing with college graduates and their struggles in after-college days, are college men or women themselves. Franchot Tone, in the leading tole, is a graduate of Cornell. Nick Foran, who has the role of an ex-football star, went to Princeton for two years and gave up college to make a career for himself. “Gentlemen Are Born” comes TONG; 5... ser Theatre on .......... with an all star cast, which ineludes Jean Muir, Margaret Lindsay and Ann Dvorak. The story, by Robert Lee Johnson, is a thrilling drama with plenty of lighter comedy touches and gay music, including familiar college songs and a new air written by the famous song team of Sammy Fain and Irving Kahal, entitled, “When You Call the Roll, Alma Mater.” The picture treats of the adventures and love affairs of four college graduates who encounter tremendous difficulties that make for intensely dramatic situations in their lives. There is an all star cast headed by Franchot Tone and three leading ladies, Jean Muir, Margaret Lindsay and Ann Dvorak. The two other romances are between Tone’s pal, a part played by Ross Alexander, and Jean Muir, and Ann Dvorak and Nick Foran, the latter the third of the college quartet.
