“Gold Dust Gertie’ Presents Screenland’s Funniest Star In Her Most Uproarious Laffalog
Winnie Lightner, Starred in the Warner Bros. Comedy,
Naw at thes"...
..Theatre, Aided In
Nonsensity by Olsen and Johnson
(Review Playing Up the Story)
Judging by the sights and sounds at last night’s opening performance of “Gold Dust Gertie,” Miss Lightner’s latest bid for the comedy crown—she wins it hands down. Winnie is an army in herself but in the current attraction she is abetted in
absurdity by Olsen and Johnson, screenland’s craziest clowns.
The picture is an adaptation of Len D. Hollister’s whirlwind play, “The Wife of the Party.” It has to do with two goofy salesmen who are in the pleasant throes (spelled throws later) of a honeymoon with twin sisters. Gertie walks into the office of the bathing-suit firm for which the newlyweds work—with the welcome news that she has at
one time or another been married]; the two}; grooms, and that they are behind in
to, and divorced from,
their alimony.
The twin wives get the alimony |: duns which Gertie mails and at}; once proceed to throw things at} Winnie discovers that}
the boys. the husbands wish to put over an ultra-modern bathing-suit for entry into a coming bathing beauty contest. This is prevented by an aged and conservative boss. Winnie takes it upon herself to win over the old boy—does so—gets the commission to wear the doubtful bathing suit she herself has designed and cajoles him into hiring a yacht
and setting sail for Florida with]
her and the boys. The brides are sidetracked, and the four start for Southern waters.
Winnie, courted by her two exhusbands, finds that the captain has also been a former sharer of more or less felicitous connubiality with her. The aged boss proposes—the newly-weds are ferced from port-. holes to the highseas—and worst of all—the irate wives arrive in Florida before the boat. Winnie of course wins the prize but not without one of the wildest chases by speed-boat —rowboat—and every other kind of boat—all of which puts mildly the grand and glorious fun of “Gold Dust Gertie!”
Those who support Miss Lightner are Dorothy Christy, Claude Gillingwater, Arthur Hoyt, George Byron, Vivian Oakland, Charley Grapewin, Charles Judels and Virginia Sale. Lloyd Bacon directed.
“Gold Dust Gertie” is a cure for whatever ails you. Go and take with you all the friends you think need a laugh. They’ll get a thousand—and one for good measure.

A Little Life Story Of One Of Biggest
Broadway Winners
(Biography May 1, 1931) |
Winnie Lightner’s mother died when she was born and she was taken by an aunt and uncle who several years later moved to Buffalo where Winnie was educated. When in the early teens she persuaded her foster parents to let her try out her budding dramatic talents on amateur nights in a local theatre. Although Winnie had planned to deliver several rather tragic songs, she was late at the theatre and had to run a part of the distance in the rain. The result was that she was shoved onto the stage before she caught her breath and her serious songs were laughed at instead of being wept over.
From that time on Winnie decided to keep ’em laughing. Her progress was comparatively rapid, first in small time vauudeville and later on the big circuits. Finally her name appeared in lights on Broadway and eventually she was starred in such musical shows as “Gay Paree,” “George White Scandals” and other equally pretentious productions.
Miss Lightner spent several seasons abroad at the London “Kit Kat” club and in Paris night ‘resorts. Returning later to the American stage she was signed by Warner Brothers to play a supporting role in one of the early musical talking pictures “Gold Diggers of Broadway.”
Miss Lightner was an overnight sensation in that picture and a long term contract was signed even before its release. This first success was followed by “She Couldn’t Say No,” “Show of Shows,” “The Life of the Party,” “Sit Tight,” “Hold Everything” and Gold Dust Gertie.”
Miss Lightner was born in Greenport. Long Island. She is of medium height weighs one hundred and twenty pounds, and has red hair and greenish blue eyes.
Duplex Biography
Of Crazy Complex Gold Dust Clowns
(Biography May 1, 1931)
Ole Olsen and Chic Johnson, the comics who play in “Gold Dust Gertie’ the Warner Bros. comedy starring Winnie Lightner, now at the Theatre, walked from a college campus into a night club as entertainers, then into vaudeville where they became reigning favorites.
Olsen and Johnson first met at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., where Chic was working his way through college by waiting on tables and Ole singing illustrated songs at the local nickleodeons. They formed a friendship which has lasted for more than fifteen years.
While still in college they arranged an act and went-to a Chicago cafe where they took a table as patrons. Without the manager’s permission, they stood up and went into their act. The outraged manager tried to stop them, but the amused crowd wouldn’t let him. They were a huge success and applied to the astonished manager for a job and got it.
Later they went on the variety stage for the major vaudeville circuits and became one of the outstanding comedy combinations behind the footlights. Unlike most variety stage headliners, Olsen and Johnson refused offers to enter musical comedv. They remained loyal to vaudeville and toured Australia for two years.
Upon their return, talking film producers approached them to appear in short subjects, but they produced their own stage show “Monkey Business” instead. At the termination of the show, which enjoyed a successful national tour, Olsen and Johnson signed with Warner Bros. and made “Oh, Sailor Behave” as their first Vitaphone starring vehicle. Their next was “Fifty Million Frenchmen.”
Others in the cast of “Gold Dust Gertie are Dorothy Christy, Claude Gillingwater, Arthur Hoyt, George Byron, Vivian Oakland, Charley Grapewin, Charles Judels and Virginia Sale. Roy Del Ruth directed.
