Loretta Young Has Chic Gown In “Grand Slam” Loretta Young, who has a leading role with Paul Lukas in the First National comedy romance, “Grand Slam,” now showing at the a ome ee Theatre, appears in the sequence of the bridge tournament in a striking new style of costume. The costume is of velvet with Roman stripes in orange, brown, tan and pale beige, worn as an afternoon frock. Rhumba Dancing Whirls Alice Jans Screenward Alice Jans, who will be seen in the cast supporting Paul Lukas and Loretta Young in the First National comedy of the American craze for _ bridge, “Grand Slam,” now showing at ties ee ee Theatre, says that her luck in breaking into picture work all came about because Yuba played the rhumba on his tuba down in Cuba. It happened when Director Al Green couldn’t find a rumba dancer for a sequence in “Parachute Jumper.” Alice heard of his dilemma and spoke right up, from the ranks of the extras, that she could dance the rhumba. And she did, so well in fact that she’ was given a contract and assigned to a role in “Grand Slam.” SHORTS CURRENT SHORTS Moran Marks 22nd Film Year with ‘Grand Slam’ Lee Moran, an old star of the films, celebrated his twenty-second year before the calcium lights while working on the production of “Grand Slam,” a First National comedy romance which is now showing at the Sg eae Me eee i oe Theatre. GLENDA FARRELL Glenda Farrell, who appears in the First National picture, ‘‘Grand Slam,’’ which is now playing at the Theatre, began her stage career by playing Little Eva in ‘‘ Uncle Tom’s Cabin,’’ when she was seven years old. She was born in Enid, Okla. of. theatrical parents, and thus has spent practically all of her life on the stage. Her first work in pictures was in the leading feminine role in “‘Little Caesar,’’ leaving immediately after that to return to the stage. She was practically forgotten when she came back to Hollywood two years later to play in ‘‘Life Begins.’? Her work in this latter picture attracted so much attention that she was. induced to forsake the stage in favor of a long term contract with Warner Bros.-First National. Among the stage hits for which she is known on Broadway are ‘‘The Rear Car,’’ ‘‘Love, Honor and Betray,’’ and ‘*Divided Honors.’’ Her most recent films are ‘‘Life Begins,’’ ‘‘Three On A Match,’’ ‘‘I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang,’’ ‘‘The Match King,’’ ‘‘The Mystery of the Wax Museum”’ and ‘‘Grand Slam.’’ Cut r5c Mat 5¢ HELEN VINSON Helen Vinson, who has a prominent role in the First National picture, ‘‘Grand Slam,’’ which is now playing at the ........ Se ea ae ee ee Theatre, is a native of Texas. She was born in the town of Beaumont-in that state and attended the University of Texas. Her university career was interrupted, however, when she received an offer to play in ‘‘The Charm School,’’ which a theatrical troupe was putting on in Houston, Texas. Following this play, she spent some time in stock, later drifting to New York where she attracted quite a bit of favorable attention in such plays as ‘‘The Fatal Alibi,’’ ‘‘Berlin,’ |. and ‘‘Death Takes A Holiday.’’ A First National executive took notice of her and offered her a contract to appear in pictures. The first picture she played in was ‘‘The Jewel Robbery,’’ with William Powell and Kay Francis. Other recent films in which she has appeared are ‘‘They Call It Sin,’’ ‘‘Two Against The ae “TIT Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang’’ and ‘‘Grand am. Page Eight picture; Grand sium, at tne. ss Theatre, trance’’ and ‘‘Grand Slam.’’ She also recently completed ‘‘The Life of Jimmy Dolan’’ with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. is slim and willowy, and has brown hair and blue eyes. e°* BIOGRAPHIES LORETTA YOUNG Loretta Young, who is seen this week in the First National was born Gretchen Belzer in Salt Lake City, Utah. Although she essayed her first screen role in a Fannie Ward picture when she was four years old, her real screen career began at the age of fourteen. Ten years before that, she moved with her family to Hollywood where she attended Ramona Convent. When the film career came along, Loretta gave up school in favor of a private tutor. It was an accident which started Loretta on her way to fame. Director Mervyn LeRoy called at the Young home in an effort to get Loretta’s sister, Polly Ann, for a part in a Colleen Moore picture. Polly Ann was away, so Loretta was suggested to take her place. Colleen Moore liked the young girl so much that she induced the studio to keep her on. Her big chance came when she played with Lon Chaney in ‘‘Laugh, Clown, Laugh.’’ In 1929 she was elected a Wampas Baby Star along with her other sister, Sally Blane, and since then she has been one of the outstanding luminaries in filmdom. Among her more recent films are ‘‘The Ruling Voice,’’ “‘I Like Your Nerve,’’ “‘Taxil’’, “The Hatchet Man,’’ ‘‘Play Girl,’’ ‘‘Week End Marriage,’’ ‘‘Life Begins,’’ ‘‘They Call It Sin,’’ ‘“Employees’ En She is five feet three inches tall, weighs one hundred pounds, PAUL LUKAS Paul Lukas, who is seen in the First National picture, ‘Grand Slam,’’ which is now at the Theatre, first saw the light of day on a railroad train as it was pulling into the Hungarian capital, Budapest. It was in his native country that he was edueated and began his theatrical career, directing various school entertainments. His first urge for the stage came as the result of seeing the work of American film and stage players. His career was temporarily halted when the war broke out and he enrolled in the Hungarian _ Cut Na. 28 Mat se Academy at Budapest. He studied there for ; two years, later making his debut on the stage in the title role of Molnar’s ‘‘Liliom.’’ His work on the stage has included plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, Osear Wilde, Chekhov, Moliere and Galsworthy. While appearing in a Moliere play, he was seen by Max Reinhardt who invited him to appear as a guest artist in Berlin and Vienna. It was in Berlin that he undertook his first screen role, appearing in a UFA film. Shortly after his return to Budapest, he was seen in a play by an American film producer who induced him to come to the United States. His first role was with Pola Negri in “‘Loves Of An Actress,’’ since then he has appeared in a great number of films, the latest being ‘‘Women Love Once,’’ ‘‘Vice Squad,’’ ‘‘City Streets,’’ ‘‘Unfaithful’’ and ‘‘Grand Slam.’’ Paul Lukas is six feet one and one half inch tall, weighs 186 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes. FRANK McHUGH _ Frank McHugh, who is seen in a prominent role this week in the First National picture, ‘‘Grand Slam,’’ at the Theatre, was born in Homestead, Pa. As a member of a theatrical family, his earliest recollections are of the stage and practically his entire education was received behind the footlights. He toured the country with his parents in their own play, ‘‘For Her Chil dren’s Sake’’ and had thorough training in road shows and stock companies before he won his greatest acclaim in such plays as ‘‘The aoc Fall Guy’’ and ‘‘Is Zat So,’’ both with James Cutie Gleason, and also in ‘‘Excess Baggage.” Mat so _ His first attempt at movies saw him play ing one drunken reporter role after another, but during the past year Warner Bros.-First National recognized his versatile ability and gave it full play in such pictures as ‘“‘The Dawn Patrol,’’ ‘‘One Way Passage,’’ ‘‘Life Begins,’’ ‘Union Depot,’’ ‘‘The Crowd Roars,’’ ‘‘Blessed Event,”’ “The Mystery of the Wax Museum”’ and ‘‘Grand Slam.’’ He started out life as a juvenile and leading man, but prefers a comedy role to any other kind.
