Joan Bradford (Miss Hutchinson), a beautiful society girl engaged to a blue blood she doesn’t like, runs away from her own engagement party and joins a New Year’s Eve throng in a chop suey restaurant, where she meets Bob Lane (Dick Powell) manager for a window cleaning company. Attracted by Bob, she engages a cheap apartment where she has him call on her. Joan gets her father to give her a check with which to start Bob in business for himself. It happened, however, that the young man was washing a window in the building where Joan’s father (John Halliday) had his office. He sees the man give Joan the check and kiss her affectionately. Angry, Bob tells Joan he did not love her, was just working her for her money and rushes away. Joan, broken hearted, decides to take a flying trip in the ‘plane of her erstwhile fiance. Bob goes to Joan’s father, whom he still thinks is her “sugar daddy,” and tells him the girl had double crossed them both. When he hands back the check, the elder man sees that Bob is on the level, and making the lad accompany him, he gets a fast car to catch the ’plane before it has taken off. When Bob hears Joan call the man “Father,” and realizes the situation, he is terribly shaken. Walking sadly to the side of a hangar he waits while Joan’s father tells the girl what really happend, and lets her know that he is going to back Bob in a window cleaning business of his own. Joan rushes over to Bob, and stops his attempted apology with a warm embrace. The star cast includes Frank McHugh, Allen Jenkins, Ruth Donnelly, Dorothy Dare and other featured players. View, Arkansas, won a screen contract with Warner Bros. through his musical talents, having been lifted bodily from a Master of Ceremonies position in a Pittsburgh theatre to an important part in ‘Blessed Event.’? Starting as a soloist with an orchestra in Kentucky, he signed up in a similar capacity with a theatre orchestra there and attracted such attention that he eventually became Master of Ceremonies at that theatre, later moving to a larger house in Pittsburgh. He turned to the stage when a boy and has been linked with the theatre ever since. He started as a chorus boy, playing in the same show with James Cagney. After three years in the chorus, he attended dramatic school and branched out as a character actor. He played in many Broadway successes, including ‘‘Blessed Event,’? ‘What Price Glory,’’ ‘‘The Last Mile, ’’ ‘*Rain’’ and ‘‘Five Star Final.’’ Last season he played in an even dozen pictures for Warner Bros. with whom he is under contract. Josephine Hutchinson Josephine Hutchinson really makes her bow on the screen in the First National production of ‘‘Happiness Ahead,’’ which comes TOMthes csi eo Theatre on Seis tae ise , with Dick Powell in the stellar role, Miss Hutchinson playing opposite him. She did, however, as a child, play a small part in a silent picture with Mary Pickford, called ‘‘The Little Princess.’? But she immediately went back to school in Seattle, where she was born, to study music and dancing. She was so proficient she won a scholarship in the Cornish School of Music and Drama. Miss Hutchinson started her professional stage career in Washington, D. C. where she worked for three years in stock. Her first New York play, which called attention to her talent, was ‘‘A Man’s Man,’’ Later she played in the ‘Civic Repertory Theatre with Eva Le Gallienne. Last season she played in the Eva Le Gallienne production of ‘*Alice in Wonderland.’’ Her work as Alice won her a starring ~ contract with Warner Bros. Dorothy Dare Dorothy Dare, who both sings and plays an important part in the Warner Bros. picture, ‘‘Happiness Ahead,’’ now showing at the Lae era ean ee Theatre, is a famous Broadway musical comedy star, although she is only twenty one years old. She was born in Philadelphia and started her stage career at the age of seven, playing in the musical, ‘‘ Night Boat,’’ with Hal Skelly, Ernest Torrence and Louise Groody. She appeared in several of the Ziegfeld shows and made a tremendous hit in ‘‘The Only Girl?” Her greatest success before g0ing to Hollywood was in. Joe Cook’s show, ‘‘Hold Your Horses,’’ in which she stopped the show every night in her numbers with Tom Patricola. Born in Homestead, Pa,, of theatrical parents, Frank’s earliest thoughts were of the theatre. Following years as a trouper in many stock companies throughout the United States and Canada, he was induced by his friend, Frank Fay, to accept a role with the latter in ‘‘Bright Lights.’’ He speedily drew the attentions of screen audiences and after having given outstanding performances in many pictures, he was signed under a long term contract by War: ner Bros. Ruth Donnelly Ruth Donnelly was born in Trenton, N. J., a niece of Mayor Fred Donnelly of that city. She was trained for the stage from childhood and started her theatrical career in the chorus with Ina Claire in ‘‘The Quaker Girl.’? She was with George M. Cohan for four years and played comedy leads with Broadway shows for many seasons before entering pictures. Miss Donnelly went to Hollywood a little more than a year ago appearing in minor roles in seyeral pictures. Her first distinctive hit came with her role in ‘‘ Blessed Event,’’ after which she was signed by Warner Bros.
