“Give a Man a Job” Campaign About a year and a half ago, Heywood Broun, in his national syndicated column, ran a “Give a job till June” campaign. He urged everyone to give a job, for a few weeks anyway, and in that way, relieve the unemployment situation. You can start the same drive again in your city. Call it the “Give a job during Happiness Week” drive. Everyone is urged to make a job for at least one person, no matter how small or trivial it may be. Start your campaign going with the three prepared publicity stories helow. Roosevelt on September 30 is successful, “T stand or fall by my refusal to accept as a necessary condition of our future a permanent army of unemployed,” the Chief Executive declared in a radio address. “We must make it a national principle that we will not tolerate a large army of unemployed and that we will arrange our national economy to end our present unemployment as soon as we can and then to take wise measures against its return. We are, just now, concerned with but one week. This is the slogan which has been adopted by the Committee which is arranging details for Happiness Week in ............ (city). Houses will be painted, furnaces repaired, the odd jobs of carpentry which have been long neglected will be completed, lawns wil be re-sodded, automobiles overhauled, everything that should be done and ean be done, will be done, in order that there will be no un employment to mar Happiness Week here. With ail the business firms, trade organizations, civic associations and fraternal bodies co-operating with the city authoritics, the Happiness Week committee believes that the goal of 1,000 new jobs by ........ (date Happiness Week begins) will be reached before that date. “Give someone a job,” a communication issued from Happiness Week headquarters reads: “If you can’t give a permanent job, give a temporary one. If you can’t use an extra man or woman for a week, use one for a day. Whether you run a business, or a home, there is neglected work that should be done. Do it now. (city) will co-operate in Happiness Week activities by arranging prompt action for home owners who wish to borrow money with which to make improvements so that 1,000 new jobs may be provided. Not only will funds be available for major alterations to buildings, but necessary repairs will be financed. Cementing cellars, repairing roofs, installing new electrical equipment, heating systems, weather stripping and similar improvements all provide work, and will be helped by the government’s long term loans. Any bank which has completed arrangements with the government to act as agent for these funds will be glad to give all details, and to be of assistance in arranging for improvement.
