“Give a Man a Job” Campaign About a year and a half ago, Heywood Broun, in his national syndicated column, ran a “Give a job till June” campaign. He urged everyone to give a job, for a few weeks anyway, and in that way, relieve the unemployment situation. You can start the same drive again in your city. Call it the “Give a job during Happiness Week” drive. Everyone is urged to make a job for at least one person, no matter how small or trivial it may be. Roosevelt on September 30 is successful, “T stand or fall by my refusal to accept as a necessary condition of our future a permanent army of unemployed,” the Chief Executive declared in a radio address. “We must make it a national principle that we will not tolerate a large army of unemployed and that we will arrange our national economy to end our present unemployment as soon as we can and then to take wise measures against its return. Not only will funds be available for major alterations to buildings, but necessary repairs will be financed. Cementing cellars, repairing roofs, installing new electrical equipment, heating systems, weather stripping and similar improvements all provide work, and will be helped by the government’s long term loans. Any bank which has completed arrangements with the government to act as agent for these funds will be glad to give all details, and to be of assistance in arranging for improvement.
