Guest Tickets to Strand Show for Best Fashion Criticisms Herald Readers Asked to Point Out Flaws in Costume Designed for James Cagney’s Hit Cut No. 23 Cut 20c Mat 10c Well, reader, here is the second and last picture in the unique Fashion contest being conducted by the Herald in conjunction with the Strand where James Cagney’s first picture this year, ‘‘Hard to Handle,’’ Whil OPO, NEXb-< 5) acy As we explained yesterday, in order to obtain a comedy effect, the Warner Bros. studio stylist, dressed Mary Brian, at the left, who plays the role of James Cagney’s sweetheart in the picture, in stunning clothes. The stylist then dressed Ruth Donnelly, at the right, who plays the role of her mother, like Astor’s pet horse. She looks funny, you'll admit. Just as funny as she looks in the movie. Now it’s up to you to point out what’s wrong with Ruth Donnelly’s costume. Every woman knows instinctively when she’s looking at a perfectly gowned woman and when she’s not. Write down the faults you find with the dress and send in your criticisms, together with the one of yesterday’s gown, to the “Hard to Handle” Fashion Editor, care of the Strand HGLOtee Twenty-five pairs of guest tickets are being offered for the 25 best criticisms. There is no reason why you shouldn’t be one of the lucky ones to see James Cagney in “Hard to Handle’, without cost. It’s a grand picture, well worth seeing and well worth working for. To Help You Judge Contest (Not for publication) Picture No. 1 Here are some of the faults with the dress worn by Ruth Donnelly in picture No. 1. The fashion editor of the newspaper you tie up with, may want to supplement this list with some of her own. The combined list should then be your gauge in judging the letters that the readers sent in. Mary Brian’s dress has been used to the best advantage by just covering the bodice. In Ruth Donnelly’s dress, there is no sense of unity. In the first place this material should never have been used in this manner in an afternoon dress. The sleeves help to make a bad contrast when the rest of the gown is striped. They literally chop off the arms and melt them into the rest of the maze giving the effect of a jigsaw puzzle. The sudden change of stripes at the knees is also very bad as. she has already practically cut the line of the dress in half by a wide black belt. The hat, is not suitable for a middle aged woman and in addition is not being worn correctly. It should cover most of her forehead either by tilting or adding a brim. Second Day (Not for publication) Picture No. 2 The black velvet dress with fringe capelet of white and black, and white and black hat to match, are perfectly suited to the height and youth of Mary Brian, but in Miss Donnelly’s dress, the fringe is badly placed. The fringe being placed in an uneven manner at her knee, accentuates her length making her look grotesque. The hat fits neither her face, age or type, the egrettes completing the discord of the ensemble. The rope of pearl though it might be the thing for an elderly matron, does not belong on this heavily fringed gown. The combination of black and white in such definite tones, is entirely too garrish for a middle aged woman.
