An historical romance, with mingled drama and comedy, it depicts the story of the love affair of glamorous Betsy Patterson, played by Miss Davies, and of Dick Powell, in the character of Jerome Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon. Rains had many scenes with exceedingly difficult dialogue, lines which required an excellent memory. Years ago he learned that if he read the dialogue before going to sleep, his mind seemed to continue working through the night and that morning found the words indelibly impressed upon his memory. So on this one night he read the scenes for the next day, turned out the light and slumbered. But at breakfast the following morning, he sensed a strange coldness on the part of Mrs. Rains. Repeatedly, he asked for an explanation, was told ‘‘it’s nothing at all,’’ but finally it came in a rush. ‘<Tt’s that woman Josephine, whoever she is,’’ said Mrs. Rains, a touch of acid in her voice. ‘<Josephine?’’ repeated Rains. ‘©Who is she?’’ ‘¢That’s what I wish I know. All night long you kept munbling ‘Josephine’ this and ‘ Josephine’ _ that. Then you _ talked about ‘paying and paying’ and then about ‘money, money and more money.’’ Yes, indeed, just who is this Josephine person that you have to talk about her even in your sleep?’’ Rains roared with laughter, jumped from his chair, hurried into the next room and returned triumphantly bearing his script of ‘‘Hearts Divided.’’ ‘«Here,’’ he said, indicating a page. ‘‘I’m Napoleon, see? And Josephine is my frau. I am a very, very busy person, what with my Empire and an extravagant wife, and I have to conduct affairs of state even while I’m bathing.’’ Mrs. Rains nodded, beginning Page Thirty-eight to comprehend, and her husband continued. ‘“So I’m telling my aide, Cambaceres, what I think about her —about this Josephine—and her spendthrift habits, and I am very excited. It is a tough scene and I read it last night before I went to sleep to help memorize it. See??? **Tt’s excellent to be so very interested in your work, Mr. Napoleon, but next time please leave dear Josephine at the studio.
