Mat No. 109 — 15c Still No. JP83 JANIS PAIGE, bright young Warner Bros. actress, makes her starring debut in that studio's gripping new film drama, ''Her Kind Of Man," currently at the Strand. Zachary Scott and Dane Clark co-star with her. 3 Stars Head Gast Of Warner Bros,’ Drama At Strand (Opening Day Reader) Hard-hitting melodrama and sweeping romance sound the keynote for Warner Bros.’ newest film drama, “Her Kind Of Man,” which opens tonight at the Strand Theatre. Co-starring a triumvirate of bright screen newcomers — Dane Clark, Janis Paige and Zachary Scott — the film also features an important cast of supporting players, among them Faye Emerson, George Tobias, Howard Smith and Harry Lewis. Based on an original story by Charles Hoffman and James V. Kern the screenplay, written by Gordon Kahn and Leopold Atlas, presents the exciting life of the late Twenties and early Thirties, just before Roosevelt went into office and prohibition went out, when gamblers flourished and high and dangerous living was the watchword of the day. Against this racy background, “Her Kind Of Man” depicts the stirring case history of a man who flaunted convention and the woman who loved him in spite of herself. Directed by Frederick de Cordova whose most recent screen effort was the highly popular “Too Young To Know,” “Her Kind Of Man” was _ produced for Warner Bros. by Alex Gottlieb. Franz Waxman contributed the original background music for the film which also features vocal renditions of many old favorites. Haunting Hardware Stores Is Part Of New Star’s Hobby Dane Clark, currently co-starring with Janis Paige and Zachary Scott in Warners’ “Her Kind Of Man” at the Strand, is spending his spare time haunting hardware stores. The new Warner Bros. star recently bought a home in Beverly Hills which he is remodeling, and every free moment he has away from the cameras is: spent searching for plumbing fixtures. Since his arrival in Hollywood a few years ago Clark, because of the housing shortage, had to live in a broken down house in which nothing worked. So for the new adobe the plumbing is going to be of the most improved type and all hand picked. Rain-Soaked Sequence Fails To Dampen Spirits A rain-filled, mud-splashed gutter is not the usual place to find glamour, but recently, on Warner Bros.’ back lot, they had a gutter full of glamour. The gutter parallels a deserted street in a New York waterfront scene. The glamour gathered for the occasion was made up of Janis Paige, Dane Clark and Zachary Scott, headliners in the new Warner melodrama, ‘Her Kind of Man,” now at the Strand. In a sequence filmed at night in a driving, studio-manufactured rain, Scott was playing hide and seek from the law for the murder of Faye Emerson. He chose a deserted shack on the end of a condemned pier to stave off justice. Janis Paige, his wife in the film, learns where he is hiding and rushes to him. Dane Clark, famous newspaper reporter also in love with Janis, accompanies her. Together with two police cars, they arrive at the pier just after Scott stops a trio of bullets from the gun of George Tobias. Seeing her dying husband sprawled in the gutter, his shirt stained with his own blood and the rain pelting his limp body, Janis Paige runs to him, kneels in the gutter and cradles his head in her arms. She speaks his name. His eyes slowly open as the rain runs in rivulets down his dirt-streaked face. Clark and a police officer, Howard Smith, walk into the scene and throw a flashlight beam on them. Scott sees the two men and asks: “How am I doin’?” Clark murmurs: “Not good.” The policeman queries: “Who gave it to you?” Scott looks up at him. The memory of a smile shadows his face as he replies: “Did I have it coming?” The cop answers: “You did!” In a voice barely audible Scott mutters: “Then why bother?” With the last word he dies in Still No. 654-25 Two bright new stars on the Hollywood horizon, Janis Paige and Dane Clark (above), share top starring honors with Zachary Scott in Warner Bros.’ new film drama of adventure and romance, "Her Kind Of Man," arriving Friday at the Strand. his wife’s arms. She sobs hysterically as the detective takes her husband from her arms and Clark leads her gently back to his car. When the sequence had been recorded by the camera, director Frederick de Cordova shouted: “Cut and save the rain!” As the sprinklers drooled off into trickles Scott pulled himself up out of the gutter and shook the water and mud from his hair. A wardrobe man came up with a big turkish towel and a heavy coat which the star shrugged into. Then he hurried off to his warm dressing room and a hot cup of coffee. Janis Paige, her teeth chattering from the downpour, received the same treatment after her soiree in the gutter. Before the next shot she was given a dry wardrobe and her hair was dried and curled. In one such night of shooting her hairdresser did her coiffure eight times. Dane Clark came off top man in the trio with just one slightly damp foot when he stepped into a mud puddle and boundless relief at not blowing his lines while Scott and Janis Paige suffered in the overflowing gutter. Thoroughly dried out and ready to try it again a half hour later from another angle, the trio assembled in front of the camera’ singing, ‘“We’re Hamming In The Rain!” Mat No. 201 — 30c Featured Player In ‘Her Kind Of Man’ Boasts Private Collection Of 6000 Records George Tobias, who plays an important featured role in Warners’ “Her Kind Of Man,” currently at the Strand, owns one of the largest private record libraries in Hollywood. The actor recently catalogued his extensive collection and by actual count has six-thousand records — mostly classical music. He is now concentrating his search on recordings of music written by Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century composers. “Her Kind Of Man,” a hard hitting drama of love and adventure, co-stars Zachary Scott, Janis Paige and Dane Clark. Still No. DCO1 Mat 107 — 15c DANE CLARK, who scored a tremendous personal success in the recent film, "The Very Thought Of You," returns to the screen on Friday when Warner Bros.’ "Her Kind Of Man" opens at the Strand. Zachary Scott and Janis Paige co-star with him in the film drama. Film Technicians Emulate Nature: Rain Falls On Gue Film technicians have emulated a feat of nature which humans have tried to control since the time of primitive man — rain making. The script of Warner Bros.’ “Her Kind Of Man,” currently at the Strand, described a rainy night on the East Side waterfront of New York. No sooner written than done is the movie makers’ motto. An overhead ramp was built complete with traffic signs, fireplugs and street lamps. Beside it were two freight cars standing idle on railroad sidings. Buildings and warehouses fronted the dock which supported a rickety pier built out over the water. At the end of the pier was a_ dilapidated shack, realistic to the point of old magazine pictures tacked on the wall. The final touch to complete the screenwriter’s word picture was rain. When director Frederick de Cordova called “Rain!” a fine misty shower fell exactly on cue from small water pipes suspended above the set. A trio of topnotch young newcomers are starred in the film. They are Dane Clark, Janis Paige and Zachary Scott.
