Theatre, Star of Broadway productions, “No, No, Nanette,” “Manhattan Mary,” “Hold Everything.” Musical comedy seems to hold an unusual attraction for talented girls. I am frequently asked how to prepare for a career in this interesting medium and how one goes about crashing the casting offices after the musical comedy arts have been mastered. Like most subjects pertaining to the theatre it doesn’t very well lend itself to broad generalizations but I think there are a number of established facts with which the ambitious novice would do well to acquaint herself. First, there is the all-important matter of singing and dancing to which years of intensive training should be devoted. I am, of course, writing for the average earnest student; there are numerous cases where a person of much native ability and little training has become sensationally successful, but most of us are obliged to work hard to complement any natural talent we may have. Dancing lessons should be begun as early as possible because you will not only use the actual dancing routines and exercises you learn, but hours devoted to dancing are invaluable in developing good carriage, poise, and other of the musi jazzy Juliette of Park Avenue! It required plenty of good strenuous exercise to get back and fourth from the ‘set. “The Hot Heiress” narrates the romance of a steel riveter and his sweetheart, a wealthy debutante, who watches him work on a skyscraper from the window of her apartment next door. An exact replica of the steel struc ture for a skyscraper was built on the First National back lot in Hollywood. And in order to produce the proper effect ‘the debutante’s apartment was built on a platform thirty-five feet from the ground so that the cameras, shooting through the apartment windows recorded exactly the same scene that would take place on New York’s. Park Avenue, the story’s locale. The apartment set was reached by a steep thirty-five foot incline which the principals were forced to climb at least three times daily; in the morning, at noon, and when the day’s work was completed. They usually made even more than the required number of daily trips because the picture was produced in August and the summer temperature coupled with the powerful, heat-generating incandescent lights made the set almost unbearably warm. After each scene the players scrambled down and out for fresh air. “And if you don’t think climbing thirty-five perpendicular feet ten times every day isn’t enough exercise, you should try it,’ Miss Munson says. “I lost three pounds the first week and a pound or so every week thereafter.” Page Six yns. -er the potential Broad.. has a knowledge of the twin arts of musical comedy she can go in quest of a job, the one problem in her career she must work out for herself. Marilyn Miller, for example, who is perhaps the greatest musical comedy star of our time, is what theatre people term a “natural.” She has almost unequalled native ability. in all branches of musical comedy essentials. Yet, no one in the theatre works harder at keeping in tip-top shape than does Miss Miller. She has taken a dancing lesson every day for years. She accepts as a matter of fact long practice periods devoted to limbering exercises and gruelling toe routine, work so exhausting that it would break the spirit of any but the most determined novice. After a girl has agreed to accept the never-ending study, got herse a job, and decided to cast her lot in musical comedy, she will find few branches of the theatre so interesting. Musical comedy gives her an opportunity to utilize her every talent; she sings, she dances, she acts. She learns how to wear costumes smartly and how to make the very most of whatever situation is at hand. To be successful a musical comedy actress must possess stage personality, but fortunately that is something that can be acquired under the tutelage of a good stage craftsman. The girl who seeks a career in musical comedy will have a lot of fun along with her hard work. Really, it’s a great life and once you’re thoroughly into it, there’s little chance that you'll weaken.
