A New Idea In Radio Sketches
If you’ve been broadeasting our regular 15 minute scene-reenactments week after week, you'll probably welcome this departure.
Instead of presenting a few scenes from the picture as is usually done, we’ve written a little play around ‘an incident during production of the picture’ which works in the cast and songs and locale within the same time limit.

semble in chorus, introductory music) ANNOUNCER: Ladies and
Gentlemen, we take great pleasure in presenting a novel radio feature, the dramatization of an interesting adventure which befell the famous Hollywood stars, Dolores Del Rio, Pat O’Brien and Leo Carrillo, who are appearing together in the new Warner Bros. picture, “In Caliente.” It oeeurred during the filming of the picture in Mexico when the three had taken time off to visit Miss Del Rio’s girlhood home, and in their automobile were hurrying back to location.
The day was hot and dry, and the stars were well covered with dust. Pat O’Brien was at the wheel.
(Appropriate sound to indicate moving auto)
PAT: Look, what is that down there blocking the road?
DEL RIO: It is a cart, such as our peons use. Slow up, Pat, it would be a shame to smash a poor man’s property.
LEO: No, no, drive around it. Let’s not waste any time. Somehow I don’t like this part of the country.
(all Carrillo speeches in Carrillo accent)
PAT: I guess that’s the owner sitting in the road. (sound of breaks grinding and ear stopping) Hey, you, come on out and move your cart out of the way.
DEL RIO: Perhaps he do not understand English.
PEDRO: I unnerstan the Eenglish. Steeck ’em up! Queeck! ~
PAT: Why you.
DEL RIO: No, Pat, he’s armed you'll get hurt. Let him take our money.
LEO: Look, somebody is putting bricks under our wheels. We’re stuck for fair.
PEDRO: Thees air only my men. You air more, how you say, valu-able than you muney you have weeth you. Vamos, Esteban,
no toma nada de la Senorita. CMe, my frans, we go to my Castillo, ha, ha, ha.
LEO: Senor mio, esta Senorita esta una de la mas...
PAT: Speak English, Carrillo, I want to know what’s goin’ on.
PEDRO: Si, spik the Eenglish, I am purty good, no?
PAT: No, you’re pretty ...
DEL RIO: Don’t antagonize him, Pat.
PEDRO: (angry) He do no such theeng to me, I am Pedro Gilermo Teresa San Isidoro y Pinares del Monte, I was lieutenant weeth Pancho Villa, an I fight any man, ees it not so, vacqueros mios.

LEO: If you say so I’m sure of it. are making a picture...
PEDRO: Oh, the arteests, no? PAT: No!

PAT: We heard all that hefore.
PEDRO: Once she is made up. You will not interrupt me once more, Senor, no?
PAT: No!
PEDRO: Bueno! Then you come weeth me. I hold you fa the ransom Vacqueros!
LEO: Senor, uno momento, this lady is Dolores Del Rio.
PEDRO: Eeet is not pos-sible.
PAT: Then somebody played a dirty trick on her mother.
PEDRO: The lovely Del Rio, the flower of Mejico, she is in the Estados Unidos, in, how you say, Hollywood.
LEO: But this is Dolores Del Rio, we are making the talking picture in Mexico.
PEDRO: You lie to me. Who lies to me dies. You insult the

PEDRO: Only, Senorita, tell me always in your picture why you are the French girl, the Indian girl, the Roosian girl, nevair a Mejicana.
LEO: Ah Senor, but in this picture, in “In Caliente,” she is the Mexican girl.
PEDRO: Gracias a la virgen.

DEL RIO: Indeed yes, and Phil Regan was supposed to try it out over the radio this very afternoon.
LEO: And just about this time. Try the radio in the car, Pat, maybe we can get him.
PAT: I am, he should be on now. Here it is (static squawks ete. Then Phil Regan singing “Muchacha.”. Spanish chorus and English chorus)
PEDRO: She is wonderfool.
PAT: He, Phil Regan, he’s in the picture too.
PEDRO: Ah Dona Dolores, wee! we see thees picture soon?
DEL RIO: Not if you don’t let us go back and make it.
PEDRO: A thousand pardons. Come, I escort you back, myself, personally. Make the room in the ear. Vacqueros, vamos! Tak away thees bricks, Pronto! (sound of the ear starting up, and then going)

DEL RIO: Beautiful actresses. They’re both in the picture, and so is Edward Everett Horton, the dancing DeMarco’s and many others.
PEDRO: You dance, Senorita? LEO: Divinely.
PEDRO: Ah! fine taste, Senor. (sound of kiss)

NARRATOR: So Dolores, Pat and Leo came safely back on location to finish “In Caliente.” And what a grand job it is. But then, why shouldn’t it be with such a cast — Dolores del Rio, Pat O’Brien, Glenda Farrell, Winifred Shaw, Phil Regan, Edward Everett Horton, Leo Carrillo and the famous dance team the DeMarcos? With Busby Berkeley staging the dance ensembles — with four smash song hits, Warner Bros., master musical makers, have outdone themselves.
