Stanley's sister, Roy, is married to Peter Kingsmill (Dennis Morgan) a promising surgeon. Three days before Stanley is to marry Craig she runs off with Roy's husband. Roy obtains a divorce and out of their mutual unhappiness she and Craig find love. The marriage of Peter and Stanley is an unhappy one and Peter is finally driven to suicide. Stanley returns home, very much saddened, but this lasts only a short while. She tries to break up her sister's relationship with Craig. When he fails to keep a dinner appointment with her, Stanley, wildly rushes to her car and speeds off. She runs down a mother and a child—killing the child—and doesn't stop to investigate. When the police call the next morning, Stanley denies having been in the car and says that a colored boy, Parry (Ernest Anderson) had taken the car to wash it. The police throw Parry into prison. Parry's mother swears that her son was home all that evening, and Roy believes her. When Craig confronts Stanley with indisputable proof of her guilt, she gets into her car and speeds away, knowing there is no one who will now help her. Craig notifies the police, who pursue her. Hearing the wail of a police siren, Stanley skids wildly around a curve and is killed when her car overturns. (Running Time: 97 minutes.) Bette plays the role of Stanley, a capricious, inconsiderate girl who believes her own happiness is the only thing that counts. Regardless of whom it may hurt, she is determined to do just as she pleases. But she never gains that happiness. Her own striving for the unattainable brings unhappiness to her and to everyone with whom she comes in contact. Her sister, Roy, played by Olivia de Havilland, is the one to be most affected by Stanley’s thoughtless acts. Stanley, who is engaged to Craig Fleming, a bright young lawyer, played by George Brent, plans to forget about him and run off with her sister’s husband, Peter, a surgeon, portrayed by Dennis Morgan. After a very short time, Peter realizes his mistake in divoreing his wife and marrying Stanley. Star-Studded Cast For Powerful Strand Film In line with its policy of showing the finest of the new crop of film entertainment, the Strand Theatre will show “In This Our Life,’ Warner Bros.’ picturization of the successful novel by Ellen Glasgow. Bette Davis is starred in the film which opens locally today. As one of the most important pictures on the 1942 schedule, Warner Bros. have produced “In This Our Life” on a grand scale, sparing no efforts in making the brilliant, absorbing novel come to life on the screen. John Huston, whose deft artistry is well known to motion picture audiences through his handling of “The Maltese Falcon,” directed the film. From the brilliant starring roles played by Miss Davis, Olivia de Havilland, George Brent and Dennis Morgan down to the smallest character “bit,’’ the film has been east with minute care. The story is concerned with the vicious behavior of Stanley Timberlake, played by Miss Davis, and the havoc. she wrought in other people’s lives; especially that of her sister, Roy, portrayed by Olivia de Havilland. Stanley, wild, inconsiderate, persuades her sister’s husband, Peter, played by Dennis Morgan, to get a divorce and run off with her, regardless of the fact that she is engaged to Craig, an aspiring lawyer, played by George Brent. Not content with having disrupted two lives, Stanley drives Peter to such depths of dispair that he commits suicide. Stanley returns and finds that in her absence Roy and Craig have fallen in love. In her usual thoughtless but brutal manner she tries to break up the relationship, but fails. Not only does she fail, but in planning to win back Craig, Stanley meets a violent but just end. Four Stars Head Cast Of “In This Our Life” Olivia de Havilland’s most recent characterization is that of Bette Davis’ sister, in the Warner Bros.’ filmization of the Ellen Glasgow best-seller, “In This Our Life” now playing at the Strand. This is the picture in which both female stars share honors with George Brent and Dennis Morgan. Others in the cast include Charles Coburn, Frank Craven, Billie Burke, Mary Servoss and Hattie McDaniel. John Huston, who did such a masterful job with “The Maltese Falcon,” directed the film and Howard Koch wrote the dramatic scenario. The locale happens to be the South but it could be anywhere, so universal is the story. 5 1
