The actor, who is currently appearing in the role of a_ hardboiled detective in Warner Bros. new mystery-thriller “Jailbreak”, now showing at the.............. Theatre, believes that he should look the part at all times. Being one of those fortunate persons who can eat all they want without putting on much extra avoirdupois, MacLane is forced to eat more than he wants in order to keep his “iron man” appearance. “Jailbreak”, is a thrilling melodrama with killings that baffle the police taking place inside a big prison. Pheatre Onesies > June de cided to take her own lunch to the studio in a regular workman’s dinner pail. This was no disparagement to the studio restaurant. It was merely because Miss Travis is inclined to put on excess poundage whenever she eats away from the family table where her diet is closely watched. Hence she prepared her Melba Toast and raw vegetables in the morning before going to the studio. While the rest of the company ate lunch in the studio cafe, June retired to her dressing room, knowing that she would not return to the set a pound or so heavier than when she left it. “Jailbreak”, is a thrilling melodrama with killings that baffle the police taking place inside a big prison. (Prepared Review) “Jailbreak” A Smashing Murder Mystery Drama Audiences Held In Breathless Suspense By Thrilling Episodes Audiences were held in breathless suspense as thrill followed upon thrill in the new Warner Bros. mystery melodrama, ‘“‘Jailbreak’, which was shown on the screen of the..............00 Theatre yesterday for the first time locally. The plot of this baffling drama is unique in that the crimes are committed within the grim walls of a big penitentiary. The picture is packed with exciting episodes, including a gun battle between police and dope runners who are cornered in a Chinese opium joint, a prison riot, the shooting of a sleeping convict in his cell, the killing of another in the jail library, the overpowering of guards and a jailbreak in which men are shot down or plunge to their death from the high stone walls. But underlying the melodramatic episodes there is a glamorous romance between a star reporter and the beautiful secretary of a_ reformed racketeer. The picture reveals the pent up wrath of men of mad passions who co not hesitate at murder for revenge or for gain. There is an unusually capable cast headed by Craig Reynolds, star reporter for a city newspaper, and June Travis, secretary of an ex-racketeer who has deliberately taken the “rap” for a petty offense to escape death at the hands of a band of desperate crooks. No flatfoot ever blustered or browbeat a prisoner with more telling effect than does Barton MacLane as a captain of detectives, and Richard Purcell is excellent as a double crossing dope runner and _ instinctive killer. George E. Stone gives a fine portrayal of a_ pathetically weak willed crook. A note of comedy is struck by Eddie Acuff in the role of a somewhat dumb police reporter, and Marv Treen, as a sob sister. Others who do notable work are Addison Richards and Charles Middleton, guards suspected of the killings; Joseph King, the exracketeer who is murdered in his cell; Henrv Hall, a confidence man killed in the prison library; and Joseph Crehan, a kindly warden. Nick Grinde has given the picture fine direction, keeping the suspense to the very climax. The story is by Jonathan Finn, dramatized for the screen by Robert D. Andrews and Joseph Hoffman. Hunted!
