PAGE 2 The Synopsis (Not For Publication) Barney Lincoln (WARREN BEATTY), a good-looking, welltailored and wealthy young American, meets a fetching young dress designer, Angel McGinnis (SUSANNAH YORK) in London. They part after one exciting date. Barney is off on a business trip to Geneva. In the Swiss city, he breaks into the Kaleidoscope card factory and etches secret marks on the printing plates which are used to print the famous Kaleidoscope playing cards used in ail European gambling casinos. Later, he turns up at the Monte Carlo casino to play chemin de fer, a high-stakes card game. Angel happens to be there, too. Barney, who can now read the backs of the cards, wins a potful of money. After watching him play, Angel puts in a call to London and follows Barney to an Italian casino. As Barney continues to win at chemin de fer, Angel meets Manny (CLIVE REVILL). Manny is the recipient of her long-distance calls. He carefully observes Barney's playing. When Barney returns to London, he learns that Manny is Inspector Immanuel McGinnis of Scotland Yard. He is also Angel's father. Manny now divulges his interest in Barney. He’ wants to use him to collar Harry Dominion (ERIC PORTER), one of the world's narcotics kings and owner of a London gambling club called "The Dominion," who is currently in debt and vulnerable to financial pressure. When Barney refuses the assignment, Manny coolly reveals that he knows all about Barney's skill at cards, including his busy night at the Kaleidoscope card factory. The essence of Manny's scheme is that Barney is to play poker with Dominion and wipe him out. Barney has to acquiesce. He forgives Angel in a touching reunion scene, and she accompanies him when he takes on the redoubtable Dominion at poker. Dominion finds that Angel is in the house and invites her into the private card room to watch the play. The game continues until the final hand, when it's Barney against Dominion and the stakes are truly enormous, almost a million dollars American. Barney wins the rich pot. The shattered Dominion leaves for his country estate, taking Angel with him and leaving word for Barney to follow for a "party." Dominion's Rolls-Royce speeds through a long dark tunnel which is the approach to his estate. Barney enters the tunnel just before the huge iron gate at the entrance slams shut. In the enormous house, things soon come to a climax. Dominion slugs Barney after forcing him to return all the money he won. Angel and Barney try to escape under gunfire from Dominion's men. They start running down the tunnel, pursued by Dominion and his chauffeur in the Rolls. Just as they are trapped by the iron gate and about to be run down, the chauffeur is shot between the eyes. Manny and other Scotland Yard men swarm around and put Dominion under arrest. Barney and Angel are in a little rowboat on the Thames. When Angel asks where they're going, Barney replies, "London, Boston, Kansas City, Cuernavaca, New York, Salamanca, Tangier and all the Thousand Islands... " Running Time: 103 Minutes
