Young Designers ‘Mod’ Fashions Debut In Major Motion Picture
The tremendously successful young British designing team of Sally Tuffin and Marion Foale has made a big impact on the American scene. Tuffin and Foale have toured the United States on behalf of their exciting designs. Their creations are in the mainstream of current fashion for youth,
The girls, both in their twenties, are brilliant products of England’s famed Fashion School of the Royal College of Art. They have come a long way since the days when they left their samples with London shops and waited for the orders to come in. Now, their work is in great demand on two continents.
Their fashions range from soft jerseys to crisp corduroys, Some especially stunning outfits were designed to be worn by beautiful Susannah York in Warner Bros.’ suspense comedy, ‘“‘Kaleidoscope.” The first is a long, white wool British greatcoat which is paired with a ripe red_ satinbacked crepe gown with bias cut sweeping hemline and a mini
strapped neckline. Another is
a light blue melton coat which features a new “stair-stepped” collar, and a straight, short cut.
Tabbed pockets and necklines, Western-inspired pants-suits, and topstitching are Tuffin and Foale trademarks, too. Hemlines are still very short, and sleeves take the long way down.
The way Tuffin and Foale create their styles is unique. They design independently, show their drawings to each other, and then select those they like best. The sketches are then made into garments and both girls offer their opinions on how the dresses can be improved.
Both Miss Tuffin and Miss Foale feel that there is an especially great demand for young designers today. “Clothes for girls between 16 and 30 used to look too much like the Paris copies,” they maintain, “There was a definite need for clothing with which the young could identify and which came in the popular price range.” It is this type of contemporary wardrobe that Tuffin
and Foale provide.
