Find Old-Timer
In every community there is an 'old-timer' who remembers when the town was mostly woods. Have him tell his story to the local paper.
A variation of this might be to run a contest to find pictures that showed busy sections of the town when they were only woodlands.
Cabin Builders Contest
Run contest for kids for best built miniature log cabins. Put the best three on display and promote newspaper break. You can also arrange tie-up with local toy store to build an effective lobby display.
Handicraft Display
Lobby display of wood handicraft to compete for prizes. This can be interesting enough for newspaper feature or photo break.
