Illicit Mash Retes hy Women in Prison Difficult to Stop
That love still laughs at locksmiths is demonstrated in Barbara Stanwyck’s latest starring vehicle for Warner Bros., ‘‘Ladies They Talk About’’, which is now showing at the Se ee theatre. Although the men and women’s section of San Quentin prison, California, which is the setting for a large part of the picture, are separated by high walls and barred doors, the prisoners succeed in passing love notes to each other.
“Not only does this occur within the prison despite all efforts to stop it, but notes are smuggled outside in various ways, just as shown in the picture,’’ declared the woman technical advisor, a former inmate of the prison who was hired to make sure that the prison scenes were authentically made.
‘“Love notes are frequently passed between men and women who have never seen each other. It seems to be a longing for the friendship of someone of the opposite sex. Nicknames are signed so the writers will not be caught.’?
The picture, based on the experiences in prison of Dorothy Mackaye, the well known actress, and co-author of the play with Carlton Miles, is a thrilling romance of an evangelist who is infatuated with one of the prisoners, an attractive bank bandit, a part played by Miss Stanwyck.
Others in the cast are Preston 8. Foster, the evangelist, Lyle Talbot,

San Quentin Permits Women to Use Cigars Forbids Them to Men
Women are permitted to smoke cigars at San Quentin prison, California, although the privilege is denied to men. This is disclosed in the Warner Bros. picture, “Ladies They Talk About,” starring Barbara Stanwyck, which is now showing at thO= ee ooo Theatre, in which one of the inmates puffs away on a Havana.
During the taking of the smoking scene, an ex-convict, who has a small role, thought Director Howard Bretherton was making a glaring error. Bretherton believed the action correct inasmuch as it was in the play by Dorothy Mackaye and Carlton Miles, and Miss Mackaye had been an inmate of the institution.
Nevertheless he consulted the woman technical advisor, also a former inmate, who explained that cigars had been prohibited for men because in the past, steel files, narcotics and other contraband had been smuggled in, in cigar wrappers. At the time the regulation was put into effect, few women smoked so it was not considered necessary to make such a ruling for them. According to the technician the women now not only can smoke cigars, but many of them do.
The screen play, by Sidney Sutherland and Brown Holmes, is a thrilling romance of a girl bank bandit, who, after a colorful career, falls in love with a two fisted evangelist. It gives an intimate picture of life in the women’s section of San Quentin penitentiary.
In the cast with Miss Stanwyck are Preston S. Foster, Lyle Talbot, Dorothy Burgess, Lillian Roth, Maude Eburne, Harold Huber and Ruth Donnelly.

Barbara Stanwyck Packs K. 0. Wallop
To the casual observer, Barbara Stanwyck appears of rather a delicate build, whether seen on the screen or in life. But actually her biceps have been highly developed by swimming and the “manly” art of self defense which she has
learned from her husband, Frank
Fay.
Howard Bretherton, her director in the Warner Bros. picture “Ladies They Talk About,” now showing at theseincsceee Theatre, and Dorothy Burgess, who plays an important role also can testify that she knows how to deliver a real haymaker.
A prison scene in the picture calls for Miss Stanwyck to plant a knockout blow on Miss Burgess’ jaw.
“I want this to look real,” declared Bretherton, when the picture was being taken. “No pulling of punches. Remember you're a tough gal, so let her have it.”
Miss Burgess gave Miss Stanwyck a lady like slap, and steeled herself, expecting a lady-like turn of the compliment. Instead Miss Stanwyck dropped her tiny fist nearly to her heels and swung up and out flush to the chin. Miss Burgess dropped to the floor like a poled steer—out cold. Miss Stanwyck was all contrition.
“J didn’t know I could hit so hard,” she wailed. “It just seemed I couldn’t stop once I started the blow.”
“What a honey,” chortled Bretherton gleefully.
The story is based on the play of Dorothy Mackaye and Carlton Miles and recounts Miss Mackaye’s actual experiences in prison. It is a stirring romance between a girl bank bandit and a two fisted evangelist.
Others in the cast include Preston S. Foster, Lyle Talbot, Lillian Roth, Maude Eburne, Harold Huber and Ruth Donnelly. The screen play is by Sidney Sutherland and Brown Holmes.
