Starring TT. x FORAN \ THE SINGING COWBOY ve and LINDA PERRY WAYNE MORRIS IRENE FRANKLIN GORDON HART Directed by B. REEVES EASON e A Warner Bros. Picture Weruer Bros.” CAMPAIGN PLAN | (Lead Off Story) Book Dick Foran At Strand In New Musical Western Very properly described as a “Land Beyond the Law” was the Territory of New Mexico in the late 70’s and early 80’s, for it was teeming with killers, cattlethieves, holdup men and defiers of the law. In fact there was very little law down there, according to authentic histories. Under that very title—“Land Beyond the Law”—and with the New Mexico borderline as its locale, Warner Bros. have produced what is described as a thrilling melodrama for its singing cowboy star, Dick Foran, and it has been: booked for the:.......2... A famed historical character who has much to do with the movement of the picture is the late General Lew Wallace—not so well known, maybe, as Governor of the Territory of New Mexico as he was later in his life, when he wrote “Ben Hur,” in the peace of his Indiana home. The General is splendidly portrayed by Joseph King. Dick Foran is “Chip Douglas,” a rollicking young cowboy, one of Lew Wallace’s right-hand men, and Linda Perry is the inspiration for a lot of Dick’s bravery. A Western with a difference— the red-blooded action of the story is interspersed with real comedy, a tender romance, and some hit songs that will soon be heard on radio programs. Dick Foran who won acting honors for his role in “Black Legion” is said to surpass all previous performances in a role which gives his talents full play. Musie and lyrics are by M. K. Jerome and Jack Scholl. Dick sings two ballads, “Whisper While You’re Waiting” and “Song of the Circle Bar,” and Irene Franklin who appears as Cattle Kate sings “Little Buckaroo.” B. Reeves (Breezy) Eason, famed for outdoor pictures, directed this one from a screen play by Luci Ward and Joseph K. Watson, based on a story by Marion Jackson. Others in the cast are Irene Franklin, Wayne Morris, Gordon Hart, Cy Kendall, Frank Orth, Glenn Strange, Harry Woods, Milton Kibbee, Edmund Cobb, Henry Otho, Tom Brewer and Paul Panzer. se (Opening Day Story) Dick Foran Back In New Thriller Of Pioneer Days Dick Foran, popular, big, redheaded Singing Cowboy of Warner Bros. pictures, returns to the Theatre today to please bis fans with the melodrama, “Land Beyond the Law.” This is said to be a lively tale dealing with the pioneer days of the Territory of New Mexico, when it was described as a land beyond all law by General Lew Wallace, who was its first Governor. This, by the way, is the same General Wallace who later won fame and fortune by writing “Ben Hur.” Foran is shown as a brave, though rather wild, young cowboy, who after a while gives up his bad companions, becomes a Sheriff and is one of Wallace’s most trusted aides in cleaning up the territory. Linda Perry is the pretty young settler’s daughter for whom Dick fares forth on hard-riding, fast-shooting exploits. Joseph King impersonates the great General Wallace. “Land Beyond the Law” was made into a screen play by Luci Ward and Joseph K. Watson, from a story by Marion Jackson. The picture was directed by B. Reeves (Breezy) Eason. Other well known performers in the cast are Irene Franklin of vaudeville fame; Wayne Morris, Cy Kendall and Gordon Hart. Foran sings two ballads written for him by M. K. Jerome and Jack Scholl — “Whisper While Youre Waiting” and “Song of the Circle Bar.” Irene Franklin, as “Cattle Kate,” sings “Little Buckaroo.” “Cattle Kate,” Sings Clever New Lullaby Irene Franklin, famous star of musical comedy and vaudeville, who has the important role of “Cattle Kate,’ in Warner Bros. melodrama, “Land Beyond the Eidwenow= abethe ...< 5,-0.0. Theatre, sings a special number in this film, written by Jack Scholl and M. K. Jerome. It is called “Cattle Kate’s Lullaby,” and is reported to be an outstanding song of its type and exactly in line with the kind of numbers Miss Franklin puts over inimitably. (Review ) Singing Cowboy Stars As Hero Of Old Wild West Dick Foran Supported by Linda Perry in Thrilling Drama of New Mexico Tapping again that vast reservoir of excitement, romance and gallant action by adventurous pioneers which lies in the history of our border States, Warner Bros. have turned this time to New Mexico in its pioneer days for one of those thrilling melodramas they made so well. “Land Beyond the Law” is the name of their current offering, which opened yesterday at the teas Theatre and won lusty applause from audiences. The title of the film is the same as that given to New Mexico in the late 70’s by General Lew Wallace (afterward the author of “Ben Hur”) who was sent there by the Government at Washington to establish and maintain order. This is undoubtedly the best of the series of Westerns with music in which Warner Bros. have starred their singing cowboy, Dick Foran. It has all the excitement incident to the usual Western—the hard riding, fast shooting and action—but in addition it has really fine characterizations and very catehy music. Dick Foran, the Singing Cowboy, is starred in the picture, as a hard-riding, dare-devil youngster who turns his talents to the use of-General Wallace, becomes a trusted Sheriff, and has a large part in putting down the killings and cattle thefts which made New Mexico a wild place indeed. Dick finds time, despite all fighting and gunplay to use that pleasing baritone voice of his in a couple of ballads written for him by M. K. Jerome and Jack Scholl. They are “Whisper While You’re Waiting” and “Song of the Circle Bar.” The romantic feminine interest is provided by Linda Perry, a pretty little newcomer to films. She had never even seen a bronco before being engaged for this picture, but within two weeks — at the cost of many bruises — she learned to ride with the best of them. General Wallace himself is seen in a splendid characterization by Joseph King, one of Warners’ _ most versatile actors. Other not ables in the cast are Irene Franklin, of vaudeville fame; Wayne Morris, Cy Kendall and Gordon Hart. B. Reeves Eason directed the picture from a screen play by Luci Ward and Joseph Watson, from a story by Marion Jackson. Comic Cowboy Is Hard To Find In Hollywood Ranks A. highly specialized motion picture role is that of a “cowboy comic.” The first and most famous one was Alkali Ike, who appeared in Broncho Billy films. He became such a popular figure that other producers introduced comedy characters in their Westerns. There are only a few cowboy comics on MHollywood’s casting lists. This scarcity is due to the unusual qualifications. “Breezy” Eason, who directed Dick Foran in Warner Bros. “Land Beyond the Law,” which COMES “COL UNO satis etc Theatre ON arent , explained: “Tt is hard enough to find a good comedian, but when you demand that he also be a good comedian, rider, bulldogger and roper, you narrow the field considerably.” Eason chose Glenn Strange for the comedy role in this picture. Strange came to the screen via rodeo and radio, having been on the original Arizona Wranglers, best known of the radio cowboy outfits. Strange is 6 feet 5 in his stocking feet, is a star rider and has a dry humor considered by directors the best brand of cowboy comedy. The “Land Beyond the Law” in which this western melodrama is set was the Territory of New Mexico in its wild pioneer days— before General Lew Wallace (later the author of “Ben Hur’) tamed it as Governor.
