“LAND BEYOND THE LAW” PUBLICITY Western Movies No Longer Just “Horse Operas” The Western picture still holds its own as one of the most widely popular types of films. But Westerns seem to have gone a little high hat. Formerly, a rousing Western— known to the trade as a “horse opera”—required nothing but a few cowboys, some broncos, some Indians and a sackful of guns. But that time has passed. “Land Beyond the Law,” starring Dick Foran, the singing cowboy, is a case in point. The picCULE SCOMES Othe: 2... ts ss (MH eatre (Ones sees yee e eels Its title was the name given to the territory of New Mexico when General Lew Wallace; (later author of “Ben Hur”) became its Governor. The gravest problem at the time was the dishonest cattle baron who set himself up as lord of all he surveyed. This included the land and cattle of smaller operators called nesters. The big fellow maintained his position by force, employing his own gunmen. The story of how this problem was solved and the country opened up for peaceful, law-abiding settlers is a saga of pioneer days. Dick Foran is starred as a fearless young cowboy. Linda Perry provides the feminine romantic interest. Joseph King plays Wallace. Other notables in the cast include Irene Franklin, Wayne ~ Morris, Cy Kendall and Gordon Hart. B. How are things on the Great Divide, Oh, Whiskey Bill!” All the boys around the campfire ecudgled their memories for the other words of the old ballad but without success. The song has the authentic ring which shows that it is one of the folk songs that are so rare and so haunting that generation after generation recalls them. There are many other stanzas and choruses, none of the gang could reeall them. Foran and the cowboys incidentally do quite a bit of singing in his present picture. M. K. Jerome and Jack Scholl have done two ballads which Dick sings — “Whisper While Youw’re Waiting” and “Song of the Cirele Bar.” The “Land Beyond the Law” in which this western melodrama is set was the Territory of New Mexico in its wild pioneer days— before General Lew Wallace (later the author of “Ben Hur’) tamed it. THE STORY Chip Douglas (Dick Foran) has a pretty wild reputation, largely because he is one of the Circle Bar cowpokes, a mixture of hardened killers and hilarious younger blades. That suits Slade Henaberry (Cy Kendall) owner of the Circle Bar and claimant of most of the rest of Bitter Creek Valley by right of conquest. His gang, headed by Tascosa (Harry Woods), Mason (Edmund Cobb) and Kirby (Henry Otho) help him rustle cattle and add to his holdings by killing off nesters. Others, such as Chip and his pals, Dave Massey (Wayne Morris) and Bandy Malarkey (Glenn Strange) are ignorant of these doings, but join the killers in raising Cain when they visit the little town of Bitter Creek. When General Lew Wallace (Joseph King) takes control of the Territory of New Mexico, he tries to get Federal aid in subduing this and other lawless outfits and saving the little cattlemen, known as nesters. But this is denied him, so he seeks a sheriff to replace the timid creature who holds forth at Bitter Creek. Meanwhile ‘“‘Cattle Kate’? (/rene Franklin) who runs the saloon and hotel, expects her 18-year-old daughter Louise (Linda Perry) to visit her from an Eastern boarding school. She gets Chip to help her make things seem more “respectable” for the young girl. So Chip meets the stage with his pals, and when Louise is “sassy”? to him, spanks her soundly! At a dance that night he forces her to dance with him, and she begins to like him. Meanwhile Chip’s father, Douglas, Sr., (Tom Brower) a sturdy old pioneer ranch Page Two Country of origin U. S. A. Dave and Bandy, who have stayed with Circle Bar in order to learn more about Henaberry, rescue him, and are deputized. The nesters form a posse, and head for San Luis Pass, where Henaberry and his gang are going to drive their cattle across the border. A final battle led by Chip takes place there, and the gang is destroyed, the cattle recovered. Then Chip wins Louise.
