“Love and Learn" is a modern comedy set in New York. It opens as
Jingles Collins (Jack Carson) and Bob Grant (Robert Hutton), a song writing team, attempt to sell one of their songs to a music publisher. .. Discouraged by the many rejections, Bob decides to return to Sperryville, Indiana, in spite of Jingles’ attempts to dissuade him. Jingles takes his girl friend, Jackie Madden (Janis Paige), and Bob to Danceland, in order to celebrate Bob's last night in town and also to get the band play one of their songs. Barbara Wyngate (Martha Vickers), an heiress, using an assumed name and posing as a hostess, meets Bob and they are attracted to each other.
Barbara makes up a story of her sordid past in an effort to keep Bob from finding out that she is an heiress. He tells her that he'll help her to
start a new kind of life, and they kiss.
chauffeur to rent an apartment under her alias. She convinces Bob to remain in New York and help reform her.
During the following weeks she keeps up the masquerade. She gives a birthday party for Jingles and asks her father (Otto Kruger) to send a gift in her name. He sends a gold cigarette case from Tiffany's. The next day Barbara gives the boys a diamond bracelet and tells them to pawn it in order to finance the publication

While waiting for the money in a pawn shop, Jingles sees a newspaper account of a robbery performed by a beautiful unidentified blonde who stole bracelets and men's jewelry. Linking events together they suspect Barbara and bolt from the shop. At her apartment, they attempt to calm her and suddenly Jingles sees a later edition of the aaa which proves the thief to be another person. Barbara tells the confused pair to return for dinner and she'll explain everything.
She takes a $1,000 check from her father to the music publisher, telling him that she is Bob's sister and secretly wants to guarantee publication of his music. He agrees, and calls the boys to break the news. Bob elatedly goes to Barbara's apartment to tell her the news, but finds that she is out. He waits outside and sees Barbara arrive in a limousine with an elderly man. Unaware that the man with her is her father, Bob misunderstands
and goes home, packs and departs for Sperulle:
After trying vainly to contact Bob, Jingles wires him that he is going to marry Jackie. Returning for the fictional marriage, Bob discovers Barbara's true identity and learns that Barbara has eloped with Willard Decker (Craig Stevens).
Wyngate and Bob give chase and reach the chapel just in time for Bob to marry Barbara. After a slight automobile accident they spend their wedding night at the local hospital.
