When Richelieu introduced Du Barry to Louis XV, the king became madly infatuated with her. Her whims were as extravagant as her appetites and the King, whom a long succession of subservient sweethearts had bored, found the girl’s saucy independence and provocative impertinence intriguing. Even when she wanted to go sleigh riding in August, Louis had his major-domo Lebel, drain Paris of its sugar supply to provide the “snow”.
The Due d’Aiguillon, handsome young aristocrat, had the courage to criticize Louis’ extravagances.
Spain had been trying to induce France to join arms with her against England. The Duchess de Grammont resenting Du Barry and seeing her brother, the Due de Choiseul, the Prime Minister of France, losing his power, persuaded him to get rid of Du Barry and to regain his influence by forming an alliance with Spain. Louis was about to accede to this, when Du Barry burst into the council chamber and demanded that she be immediately presented at court.
The Duchess de Grammont persuaded the King’s daughters to forbid any noblewoman to stand sponsor for Du Barry, and when Richelieu provided a drunken countess to act as godmother at the ceremony, de Choiseul had her kidnapped. He also had his minions steal Du Barry’s wig and presentation gown. The King-and court waited impatiently until

Du Barry, in one of the most daring and certainly the most intriguing scene ever filmed, appeared in her nightgown. The
King sat in shocked astonishment, when suddenly d’Aiguillon stepped over to Du Barry, offered his arm and led her to the King. She told him she would not forget his kindness.
Later, Du Barry invited de Choiseul to her bedroom, bedecked him in the King’s gown and slippers, and then arranged for the monarch to discover them. When the King appeared, she accused the Prime Minister of attempting to attack her, and wept with such convincing prettiness that de Choiseul was disgraced, and d’Aiguillon named Prime Minister, thus averting war with England.
Marie Antoinette of Austria arrived to marry the Dauphin, Louis’ grandson. Marie, already showing the imperiousness that later characterized her conduct on the guillotine, declared war on Du Barry and demanded her expulsion from the palace. Louis became so excited over the fuss that ensued, that he had a stroke from which he died. Du Barry was ordered imprisoned, and tripped off gaily to her abbey prison, her arms entwined in those of two soldier guards.
“Madame Du Barry” is a veritable screen masterpiece. It is gorgeously costumed, capably
acted and directed with real feeling and historical accuracy.
