EXPLOITATION i 4 MERRY XMAS ANGLES PICKING ‘MISS PACIFIC FLEET’ AS CO-OP IDEA THEATRE, RADIO AND DEPT. STORE CAMPAIGN You can have a beauty contest winner without all the bother of a beauty contest if you follow through on this stunt to pick the ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’ of your city. All you need is the cooperation of local department store. Start it going this way: _ PICKING THE WINNER A committee consisting of yourself, head of department store, newspaper editor and public official, pick ‘the most beautiful gal’ in town and name her ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’. We'd advise you to be sure to pick a femme who'll cooperate with you on all the stunts you plan—so consult her in advance and find out if she'll be willing before naming her ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’. PUBLICIZING THE WINNER Tell the papers all about ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’, about the committee that picked her, have the photographers down to snap her in different poses, have the woman’s page writers interview her as to her tastes in style, diet, recipes and advice to the lovelorn. Have her photographed at theatre standing beside a blow-up of Blondell and Farrell. DEPARTMENT STORE COOPERATION Cooperating department store runs a week of special sales in honor of ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’, featuring items with the sailor motif, such as sailor blouses, dresses with sailor patterns, hats with a dash of the navy about them, etc. Store should also feature navy blue clothes. Store, in advertisements and window displays, announces that ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’ will open the store on the day that sale starts and that she will sell in various departments each day. ON THE AIR Sponsored program might be induced to have ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’ on their program as guest star. She could spiel on her reactions at being picked as the winner, or talk on beauty hints. Or else, station might put her on as a regular feature, to give a short talk daily on beauty. Might be good human interest stuff to have local radio interviewer chat with her about her life, ambitions, etc. If you’re presenting the radio dramatization, why not have your ‘‘Miss Pacific Fleet”? do the Blondell role in it? AT THE THEATRE Your winner should surely be down to theatre opening night, and could even make a short speech from stage. Might arrange to have her sell tickets for first hour ticket office is open. : | GUEST OF HONOR Arrange to have the gal step around to all night clubs and hotels in town as guest of honor for the evening. Master of ceremonies introduces her and she makes a short talk at each place she visits. BEAUTY CONTEST FLOAT If you build a float to resemble a beauty contest float, have ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’ on it as the float tours the streets, as pictured. Band bearing her title is pinned over her chest, and the music blares away through amplifiers, giving the crowds something to look x a at and listen to. You might even hand her a batch of heralds and xy Al, bd ee ° 2? ° ~“E ODN let pee hand ’em out to her public.” Guy on float to spiel about film will help tell your story. ee (ae, FREE RADIO SKETCH BEAUTY CONTEST IN TOWN Baa da eet arenas ocd eet tt crn Sketch is twelve hilarious minutes long, with three minutes at beginning and end for picture plug. If you can use ’em, write to Campaign Plan Editor, 321 West 44th Street, New York City. A mimeographed copy for each member of the cast is ready to be sent by return mail. The beauty contest to pick ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’ plays a large part in the film. You can run one along the same lines, by trying to find the ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’ of your town. Cooperating merchants could hand out votes with purchases— gal receiving the highest number copping the title. If you’re playing this film before or during Christmas, two stills above may be incorporated into your campaign. One at left is BL 735 and at right, BL 734. They’re 10c each, and can be used as follows: 1. Department store illustrates still with line “Xmas shopping suggestions by the star of ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’.” 2. Blow-ups of still could be shown in lobby to herald your annual Xmas show or patty. 3. Still may be used as illustration on Xmas heralds. 4. Shops around town could use stills in their windows showing gift suggestions for Xmas. MERCHANTS WELCOME ‘FLEET’ IN ADS AND WINDOWMSPLAYS Last year in New York City when the fleet cance in, all the merchants cooperated by welcoming the fleet in their ads, and running special navy items in honor of it. Main Street merchants might be willing to come in on a special welcome to ‘Miss Pacific Fleet’ in the same way, with “‘welcome” ads and window displays. Store of course will plug their own specials such as middy blouses, dresses cut on sailor patterns and navy blue suits, dresses and coats, etc. OLD SONG MAKES NEW IDEA lp ree ee Remember the song, “She Was Just a Sailor’s Sweetheart?” It fits right into the spirit of this show, so do your best to repopularize it. Have band leaders on stage, nite club and radio play it, dedicating it to film. Get the music shops to show the sheet music in their windows and play the song via record through their amplifying system. Over a blow-up of Farrell and Blondell, put the song title as a caption. Week before film opens, use the song as your exit march, with announcement over P. A. System about coming film. Ee EN ee GAL SIGNALS ON MARQUEE Se If you set a pretty gal up on your marquee dressed in sailor costume, put a pair of signal flags in her é hands for her wave ee ee in sailor fashion at a similarly dressed honey across the street. Passers-by will notice the stunt, all of which puts your title right in the line of their vision. Barker helps stunt along. Page Three
