They are threatened with scandal due to the blackmailing schemes of Bayard Thatcher (William Davidson). He demands that the family raise twentyfive thousand dollars for him at once. The members of the family he threatens, include Dave Thatcher (Gordon Elliott), Janice, Dave’s wife (Claire Dodd), Hilary Thatcher (Joseph Crehan), Evelyn, Hilary’s wife, (Florence Fair), and Adela Thatcher (Virginia Brissac), his spinster aunt. That night someone enters Bayard’s bedroom and shoots him. The wound is not serious, however, and the rest of the family decide to call in a doctor and a nurse and tell them that Bayard shot himself while cleaning his gun. Dr. Allen Carick (Lyle Talbot), and Sally Keating (Marguerite Churchill), the nurse, arrive at the mansion. They have been together on many cases, and are very much in love. Dr. Carick dresses Bayard’s wound and departs, Miss Keating remaining with the patient. While they are alone Bayard tells the nurse that his wound was not the result of an accident. She soothes him and retires to her adjoining room. A few minutes later she hears an angry conversation in her patient’s room, and looking through the keyhole, she sees Janice attempting to snatch a love letter from Bayard’s hand. Janice does not succeed, however, and slips out of the room. Later in the day the district attorney arrives. He is John Tweed (John Eldredge), also. a member of _ the Thatcher family. Sally sees that he and Janice are in love with each other. When Dr Carick returns that afternoon. Sally tells him her suspicions of all that is going on in the Thatcher household. The next day all of the members of the household go away for the afternoon. Sally is left alone with Bayard. She is sitting out on the lawn as Adela Thatcher, the last one to leave, departs on an errand. When Adela returns later in the day she meets Sally who is still seated in the yard in front of the house. As they are talking a maid runs out of the house with the news that Bayard is lying dead in the library. He has been shot through the heart. A few minutes later Dave Thatcher is found dead. There is an investigation and everyone is under suspicion until Sally discovers the murderer. Adela Thatcher, spinster head of the Thatcher family, killed Bayard to save the family honor and reputation. The aged woman admits her guilt, and dies a few moments later from a heart attack. Dave proves to have been a drug addict and died from an overdose of poison. Their case finished, Dr. Carick and Sally depart for the city, intending to get married. “MURDER BY AN ARISTOCRAT” 100% with Lyle Talbot—Marguerite Churchill Claire Dodd 75% Virginia Brissac—William Davidson John Eldredge 20% Gordon Elliott—Joseph Crehan Florence Fair 20% Directed by Frank McDonald 20% A First National 40% Productions Corporation 5% Picture 25% LHE CAST MOP ALLO: MO UTECR ac eee os a Lyle Talbot Sally Keating...
