The Story At the turn of the century, Chauncey Olcott (Dennis Morgan) bids his mother (Sara Allgood) goodby, and leaves to embark on a singing career, using the name of “Jack Chancellor.” He sees Lillian Russell (Andrea King) on the stage, and after the performance crashes her party, but the fabulous beauty prefers her wealthier suitors. Unsuccessful on Broadway, he drifts upstate and gets a job in a small hostelry. Here he meets Rose Donovan (Arlene Dahl), and falls in love on sight. He also makes a new friend with the bell-hop (Ben Blue) at the hotel. These two plot to lure a visiting minstrel troupe away from a rival hotel, so Jack can join the show. When one of the end men falls ill, Jack persuades the manager that he can fill the gap. He gets the spot. When the show comes to New York, Rose’s fiance (Don McGuire) becomes jealous and sends some cronies over to Jack’s, boarding house to beat him up. Only Jack has been keeping in shape himself with his athletic friend, William Muldoon (George O’Brien), known professionally as the Iron Duke, and the intruders are tossed out bodily. After this incident, Jack decides to try Broadway again. He meets the famous Miss Russell next in a booking office, and she signs him for her new show. Jack now resumes his own name of Chauncey Olcott. Rose becomes upset over this association and visits Miss Russell in her apartment. The actress understands and decides to give Chauncey up, professionally as well as romantically. Later Chauncey meets William Scanlan (William Frawley), the leading Irish tenor of the day, whose voice is beginning to fade. Scanlan hears Chauncey sing and hires him to double on his own singing chores. In Boston, on St. Patrick’s Day, Scanlan’s voice gives out completely and he steps aside, turning over his mantle to Olcott. Chauncey, now a full-fledged star, takes time to elope with Rose . . . his wild Irish rose.
