ESSENTIAL INFORMATION THIS 1S FHE STORY | (ric: for Puntcation Wearing the Silver Star and the Purple Heart, Sgt. Nick Blake (JOHN GARFIELD) receives his honorable discharge from the army and, with his faithful henchman, Al Doyle (GEORGE TOBIAS), he goes to his old apartment, occupied in his absence by his girl friend Toni (FAYE EMERSON), a night club singer. He soon learns that Toni has a new boy friend, Chet King (ROBERT SHAYNE), and when he asks Toni for the $50,000 he left in her safekeeping, Toni and Chet try to alibi by saying that Toni invested and lost the money in a night club venture. But Nick lets his fists do some fast talking in Chet's direction and Chet quickly produces the $50,000. Nick and Al decide to go out to California. There, Pop Gruber (WALTER BRENNAN), a shabby but sharp-witted oldster, tries to sell Nick on a deal involving a charming, lonesome widow with two million dollars. Although Nick likes the idea, he does not like Doc Ganson (GEORGE COULOURIS), a double-crossing has-been, nor his two seedy pals, Windy (RALPH PETERS) and Shake (JAMES FLAVIN), whose original idea it was, and who would have to be cut-in on the profits. But two million dollars is a lot of money so Nick agrees to make the pitch. Assuming the identity of a businessman engaged in deep-sea salvage work, Nick moves into the fashionable hotel where the widow, Gladys Halvorsen (GERALDINE FITZGERALD), resides. He soon meets her and her business manager, C. W. Manning (RICHARD GAINES). The friendship develops nicely—so nicely, in fact, that Doc and his pals think Nick has fallen in love and begin to suspect a double-cross. At this moment, Toni arrives on the scene to tell Nick she's through with Chet. But Nick brushes her off, realizes that he really is in love with Gladys and knows he cannot go through with his scheme to fleece her. When Doc warns Nick, again, not to muff the job, Nick determines to pay off Doc, Windy and Shake from his own money, then to return East and forget Gladys. But before he can do so, Manning learns Nick's real identity and warns Gladys. In conjunction with the District Attorney's office Manning tries to trap Nick by offering him several thousand dollars for his deep-sea business plans. But Nick says the prospects are sour and turns down the money. Alone, Nick later admits his identity to Gladys and tells her things must end between them. She does not agree with him. Nick attempts to pay off Doc but is turned down and, instead, Doc demands the sum of half a million dollars to be paid after Nick marries Gladys. Doc pulls a gun out, but Nick reverses the situation and sends him on his way. Back at the hotel, Nick learns from a frantic Manning that Gladys has disappeared. Actually, Windy and Shake have whisked her off by the ruse of saying Nick is in trouble. Together with Doc they take Gladys across a stretch of desolate beach road to a hideout. But Pop and Al, earlier detailed by Nick to report on Doe's activities, inform Nick, who rushes with them to the hideout. In the terrific fight that follows, Doc is killed, Windy and Shake are nabbed by the police, and Pop pays with his life for his loyalty to Nick. Left alone on the pier in the quiet light of early morning, Nick and Gladys at last acknowledge their love for one another.
