co-starring with ROBERT ALDA ¢ ROSEMARY DE CAMP prrecrep BY VINCENT SHERMAN \sizcsse tcctssnete athe tte ea THE STORY (Not for Publication ) Dr. Richard Talbot (Kent Smith) is a man of regular habits who has led a respectable, middle-class life with his wife, Lucy (Rosemary DeCamp) and their two children, Bonita (Wanda Hendrix) and Gregory (Robert Arthur). When Lucy and the children go away for a weekend, Richard goes to see Nora Prentiss, (Ann Sheridan) a patient of his who is a night club singer and a strong attachment grows between them. At the club, Richard meets Nora’s friend and employer, Phil Dinardo (Robert Alda), who is also in love with her. After several clandestine meetings, Richard and Nora confess their love for each other. Faced with the irresolution of their problem, Nora decides to accept an opportunity to appear in the New York night club which Dinardo is about to open. Frantic with the thought of losing Nora, when a patient suffering from a heart disease, drops dead in Talbot’s office, the distraught doctor notices the similarity in their appearance and changes identification with the dead man. He stages an automobile wreck in which the supposed body of Dr. Talbot is burned beyond recognition. Nora and Richard leave for New York, but it isn’t until weeks later, after furtive nights and days in keeping the truth from Nora, that Talbot confesses what he has really done. Nora confronts Talbot with the horrifying possibility that he may be sought for murder. The San Francisco police are prompted into an investigation by Dr. Joel Merriam (Bruce Bennett), Talbot’s former associate. Despite Nora’s loyalty to Talbot, his disintegration is manifest in continuous drunkenness and unreasoning jealousy of Nora’s innocent associations with Dinardo. In a moment of blind jealousy Talbot strikes Dinardo, when he finds him with Nora in her dressing room, and is badly injured in an auto accident while attempting to flee. Talbot accepts the knowledge that his face is mercilessly scarred as a blessing, reasoning that he will not ever be recognized as the missing Dr. Talbot. However, this strange new identity envelops him in a bizarre situation and leads to the film’s horrifying denouement.
